A star shaped logo appears in task bar at botom right side of the computer. When mouse is placed over it the prompt is that "you may be a victim of software counterfitting." And when you click on it... the whole Authenticate Windows page option appears. It's a little annoying at this point.... any advice?

If you click to "get genuine" it should take you the website at Microsoft for a solution. If you have a legit copy you can select to activate over phone....this only takes about five minutes (although its really annoying) you have to enter the 25 digit installation code (not the key code) and the phone prompt will then take you to a live agent who wil ask you for the numbers and then give you an activation code. If you do not have a legit copy, you need to do 1 of 3 things.....get a legit copy and install it, change the product key and reactivate windows, or there is a registry hack that allows you to turn off the genuine advantage tool, but it resets the activation period (45 days before it becomes inactive)....It used to be easier to disable the WGA but its now built up to the point you can only turn it off temporarily....the website that comes up when you click on "get genuine" has a link to tell you how to re-enter or change the product key via a change in the registry, and its this same change you can use to "de-activate" your copy of windows.

This sounds like it is a WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) prompt. You will need to speak to Microsoft about it. They obviously believe you are running a counterfeit edition of Windows software. If you have a genuine copy and you have not allowed anyone else to install it, then you should be OK.

Annoying ? You are most likely using a pirated version of Windows, you need to either contact Microsoft if you know you paid for one, or pay for a new licence.
