Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron that in all future generations, his descendants who have physical defects will not qualify to offer food to their God. No one who has a defect may come near to me, whether he is blind or lame, stunted or deformed, or has a broken foot or hand, or has a humped back or is a dwarf, or has a defective eye, or has oozing sores or scabs on his skin, or has damaged testicles. Even though he is a descendant of Aaron, his physical defects disqualify him from presenting offerings to the LORD by fire. Since he has a blemish, he may not offer food to his God. However, he may eat from the food offered to God, including the holy offerings and the most holy offerings. Yet because of his physical defect, he must never go behind the inner curtain or come near the altar, for this would desecrate my holy places. I am the LORD who makes them holy." (Leviticus 21:16-23 NLT)

At this time in the bible, people born with defects were not allowed to draw close to the altar, because any kind of blemish was considered the sin of imperfection. With sin coming into the world, it brought imperfections in the flesh with it. If anyone were to approach the holy place in a unauthorized manner with a imperfection, the holiness of God would destroy them. That's why thy were not allowed to draw near. It is not that God did not love them. Remember, Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan was lame, but he was allowed to eat at king David's table. Also, the Lord Jesus said concering the lame in Luke 14:21, ".....Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind". Moreover, God has always provided a way for those who are crippled or with defects to be healed in His season. Remember the Lord Jesus went about healing those who were lame. Mat 15:31, "Insomuch that the multitude wondered when the saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel". In fact, I was born with crooked ankles as a child and I could not walk. A child orthopedic doctor had my feet fitted for these specialized boots which were supposed to straighten my ankles. I was 3 years old and I remember how painful those boot were. They had metallic pins which dug into my ankles. I kept taking them off because of the pain. However, my grandparents (who were Christians) came up from Arkansas and put oil and prayed over my ankles and they straightened out. I began to run and play with the other children. All to the praise and glory of God.

At that time, no one with ANY type of imperfection or blemish could enter into the Holy of Holies. There was a whole set of rules for the ritual cleansing that the priests had to undergo before they could go in, and only men were allowed to do so.

Maybe that's why Jesus healed so many people. So they could be closer to God. Maybe that's why Jesus has to give us a brand new healthy body cured of all defects before we go to heaven.

it's for selection - you do not want the borked genes to go on, especially when you're a small group which makes in-breeding inevitable.
