If someone had a 14 yr old dog and it was overweight how many years of life do you think it would take away from the dog.

I wouldn't worry about it. If the dog is 14 years old....which is pretty much life expectancy...let them be a little pudgy. No sense going on a diet now. Let the old guy enjoy the rest of his life!

Depends very much on the breed and, more importantly, who long the dog had been overweight for. If it's a fairly recent thing, like within the last couple of years, I daresay the dog will go on and on until things like arthritis rob him of his quality of life.

If the dog has always been slightly overweight, he's now in serious danger of developing problems if he hasn't already. I would suggest an overweight dog of 14 could live years longer, but if he wasn't overweight he would certainly survive years longer than that even.

The thing about overweight in animals is, they can still sometimes live decent length lives if they're not massively obese, but you'll never know how much longer they could've lived if they hadn't been overweight. Also, a slim dog is a happier dog, and quality of life is more important than quantity.

I run weight clinics for animals, so email me if you want advice, or just go to a vet you trust.

Im not sure but it certainly has a high risk of developing diabetes and other weight related health issues!

14 is old for a dog so weight management should happen now!!

why not take the dog to the vet. they will know what you need to do. being over weight or under weight is not good for anything so doing the right thing here would only add to your pet and not take away from it.
