...inside waiting to do you harm. What does the law say about self defense in this situation?

1) First, if you got in the car and that person attacks you, to what extremes can one go to when defending oneself in their own car? Can you actually kill them...? Not necessarily with a concealed weapon that you have on your person.

2) Next, if you can harm/kill them in self defense, would it be legal to install, let's say, a device that dispenses a gas of some sort? or maybe like a stun gun device that electrocutes the hiding passenger?

I assume its obvious you can't have any chemical warfare types of gases. I ask cause in the commercial the lady ends up walking away from her car. What happens if that person in waiting jumps out and chases her around the desolate lot. Other than that lets hope the alert (built into the car alarm) remote has a great enough range.

Question 1 is just a separate question to setup, qualify, and justify the answer to question two.

As far as why you would want to ruin the interior of your car. It's just an extreme measure, for an extreme situation. Lets say if a serial killer/repeat offender has targeted your area...or perhaps an abusive spouse who won't quit until you're dead and will just become more determined and more enraged. A type of person who must be caught to prevent them from victimizing a another person.

What the lady in the commercial does, walk away, is the right thing to do. Go call a cop.

If you know someone is hiding in your car why in the world would you get in?? Assuming that you did not know someone was hiding in your car and that person attacks you, yes, you can use deadly force to protect your life.

There is one company in South Africa, I think, that will install a flame thrower type device under your car to defeat car jackers. So, yeah, you can pretty much do anything you want to your car if you got the money. Legal is another matter. However, since owning pepper spray is still legal in most states, I suppose installing a pepper spray dispenser in your car would not be illegal. Same could propably be said of a stun gun/taser device.

There are some practical problems though. Your automatic pepper spray goes off in your car and nails a bad guy. Great! Now, how are you going to get the peppery spray out of your car? One of my officers once got into a patrol car and got his MACE canister caught on something. He fired off a burst of mace in the car, for just the few seconds it took him to get back out. We had to take out the front seat and replace it. We couldn't use the car for a week.

You want to electrocute the bad guy. Neat! Until the creep's family and, of course, the ACLU, sue you for killing their sweet, misunderstood, but lovable thug.

As for the lady who walks away from her car. If the thug jumps out of the car and starts chasing her. She has every right to use deadly force to stop the attack.
