While choosing a new system some months back, i was considering between Vista and XP Pro. I chose Vista because..
.. I love the way Microsoft does its licensing. If I get Vista Home Premium now, the license is only backward compatible to XP Pro. So, I'll miss out on all the media center features that I want if I get XP Pro... and I REALLY REALLY WANT MY MEDIA!!
Once I got Vista, and I moved all my stuff from the old PC to the new..
.. I just love the way Vista fails to recognise most of my old hardware. Its given me many hours of fun, job experience, and troubleshooting skills when I have to first reassemble my old PC in order to get onto the internet (cos Vista doesn't recognise my modem) to get drivers for all the other hardware.
.. I just love how Vista forces me to take a break from the boring process of surfing the net and IMing by giving me a blue screen every once so often. I think it must have some form of built-in intelligence since it always know when I really need a break. It happens especially when i'm 3 hours into a document or spreadsheet and am so bored with the work i'm doing.
.. I just love the way the new interface works. I've had so much fun just wasting hours away to look for features that were so accessible from previous versions. The way the menus are arranged really does make sense since in order to be familiar with the system, it forces you to spend hours looking for the features you want.
In fact i'm so in love with Vista right now that i'm thinking of going one step further and immerse myself in a state of nostalgia and just reformat the whole thing and install XP.

I have it on a laptop. I have Linux on another laptop, I have a linux server, I have a gaming desktop running XP. My operating system of choice which I have no computers running is OS X although I hope to set up a dual boot hackintosh out of my server soon.
Vista really isn't bad if you don't get compatibility problems. Those compatibility problems stem from Microsoft finally having to overhaul a lot of their old code to get rid of some of the complaints about Windows's overall slowness, ugliness, insecureness, and instability. These will go away in time as manufacturers struggle to bring their products Vista support. Vista is also pushing for greater 64-bit acceptance in the Windows section which is a good change.
That said it's still Winblows and I can't wait to get my first Apple. On top of all that I would not recommend using Vista for gaming yet as it is simply not gaming optimized in the least yet.

Well.......Windows Vista Is a very new operating system, it has tons of new features, more security, and everything else.
I would also like to let you know that Windows Vista is a BIG upgrade; Windows Vista is technically Windows NT 6.0, a large overhaul over the OS it was built on, Windows Server 2003 (Windows NT 5.2)
Windows Vista's Predecessor (on the client side), Windows XP (Windows NT 5.1), is still a fully compatible, modern operating system, that still runs great, and It will be fully supported until 2012 or so, and heck, I'm even running it fine on my Network, and all of my programs run fine on Windows XP, even my old programs that were designed for Windows NT 3xx and DOS...
I have been using Windows Vista (longhorn) since its very early beta days, and there have been ups and downs, and most the downs I had were Graphics issues, Driver Problems with legacy Hardware (like my 10 year old Flat-bead scanner), and even modern software problems (like Itunes 7)....
Windows Vista is very new, fresh, and all that, and there have been several issues lately with it......And I recommend the following:
*If youre running an old machine that runs something like Windows 98 or Windows NT to think about getting a new machine...SOON, or switch to an alternative like Linux, and then think about a new machine in like a year or so
*If you are running Windows 2000 (and are running it on a newer machine), I recommend Installing Service Pack 4 and the rollup (if you havent), IE6 with SP1 and all of its hotfixes (or use firefox), Media Player 9, .NET 2.0.....and use Windows 2000 until later this year, When Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is released, then i suggest Migrating to Vista then
*If you are running a new, or fairly newer machine that is Running Windows XP SP2, keep Windows XP for about a year or so, then deploy Windows Vista (When Windows Vista SP1 or 2 is out)......or Keep Windows XP on it completely, and continue to update XP as much as possible, by installing SP3 later down the road, IE7, MP11, etc....and just wait a few years down the road for a new PC
*If you got a new machine with Windows Vista preinstalled, you're all set, although you may face issues with your programs and all that, so try running under capability mode....or if you're screwed, try getting a copy of Windows XP (SP2) and running it under Microsoft Virtual Machine....Stay informed about Vista patch updates, and install updates frequently...
**Long story short, If youre running Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2, wait for Windows Vista SP1, at least
***Remember, never listen to Microsoft's "Riff-Raff"....Never get new software immediately after it comes out...Wait until a service release or service pack comes out, when the operating system is then MAINSTREAM, where almost everyone uses it

Considering it is a 64 bit system and there is only 32 bit systems available for it right now, I'd say it's crap, but within the year when 64 bit systems are developed to support it, it will be a very good system.

Sooo bad. It encorages me to get my Word docs done quickly. My database can now hold more, in fact so can my Excel sheet. And dang it, I can now control my tv as well. I hate all this efficiency and capability. Now if something is late, they will blame it on me. Drats!!
