It's a licence that we have to have if we own a TV...same as having a licence to drive,,,,as in you can't legally drive on the public highways if you don't have a licence, well you can't legally watch TV in your home if you don't have a licence....this is the link to the Licensing site and you can get all the information about them there...
http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/index.jsp
and this is the link to the BBC site which explains TV licensing...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/licencefee/
The fee, which is set by the Government, means that we can have a service where there are NO interruptions for adverts....all the other channels are paid for by revenue raised by the adverts...

Just to defend the TV license.
You get 8 TV channels, 10 Radio Stations, plus the BBC website including the excellent BBC News. None of these have any form of advertising. Just compare the BBC's news coverage to anything put out by American broadcasters and you can see that old adage, "you get what you pay for" in action. As they dont have to chase ratings to apease sponsors, they can (usually) report the news accuratly and without bias with no need to sensationalise (or lie if you're Fox News)

The TV licence is a tax on owning a television.
It dates back to the days when the rich and powerful wanted to ensure that the lower classes could not access information with pictures, thus seeing that people in other countries lived better than in England.
The tax still continues.
Not to pay is a criminal offence!
It is a brilliant way of giving newly arrived foreigners a criminal record because of their ignorance of this antique law.
The cost of collection is, of course, enormous and completely unnecessary.
If you consider that 99.9% of people have a TV, the money should go directly from the government to its fully owned organisation, the BBC. It is just a way of employing a large number of totally unnecessary civil servants.
'If they were not sheep they would not be shorn!'

A TV license is a ridiculous amount of money you pay per year just for the joy of having a TV. it's about £100. It comes from the BBC days when you had to pay for public service broadcasting and you only had 4 channels. even if ya don't watch the BBC channels you still have to pay.
Get one thought because they have patrol vans who pick up signals and they fine you £1000 if you don't have one!!

this is where you buy it or find out about it. You must have one to every household that is flat or room in a boarding house or student room.
and while many people complain about it. it is the only way the BBC gets its funding as it does not do adverts like ITV or subscription like sky. and considering what they give i think its damn good value for money
