I thought it was funny that someone answered with "an absence of pre-conceived notions".. Umm.. NOT! Obviously the Atheists have a pre-conceived notion that the Bible is false.. and the Christian has a pre-conceived notion that it is true.. That to me is just a plain silly statement.. I could understand if someone said that they read the Bible and THEN made their decision as to whether to believe or not.. then they didn't have pre-conceived notions necessarily.. but obviously, if they're Atheist already.. they absolutely have a pre-conceived notion that it's false.
Now.. as for your question.. I would not say that Atheists understand the Bible better than Christians.. That in fact is a very strange statement since the Atheists I seem to hear from a lot.. seem to say that the Bible is a "fairy tale".. so obviously they don't understand it. To them, it seems, it is a book just simply made up by man.. So there wouldn't then be any "true meanings" to be knowledgeable of, would there?
By saying that they know the "true meanings" of the scriptures must mean that they have some belief of where it came from and so on.
Some Christians do talk "silly stuff".. But some Atheists do too! All the cracks about the Bible are usually based on misinterpreted scriptures, etc.
I don't understand how talking to Atheists who "know" scripture could help it "make sense" .. since they don't believe in it.. then how could it make sense??? That would be like me trying to explain Shrek to you and you saying "oh, since you believe it is a fairy tale, now that you explain the story to me, it makes perfect sense"... Goofy don't you think?
Anyway... I am thinking my point won't be considered anyway :)

I believe many atheist know the bible better than Christians but not understand it. Knowing it and understanding and comprehending it are two entirely different things. The bible is a very unique super natural book that requires an ingreediant only Christians posess. That ingreediant is the holy spirt. So no atheist don't understand the bible better than Christians. Do some atheist know the bible better then christians ? Sure but it's highly doubtfull they understand what it is they know.

NIV/The Message is the best way to understand the true meaning of the Scripture, which you must feel. It takes years to truly grasp the essence of the New Life Vineyard faith. It is a revisionary movement, not a conservative one. On atheists: I have oftened wondered if their extreme fascination with Christians is some sort of compensation for their guilt over denial. I am just speculating here. My mother is indifferent as an atheist. She simply asks that we not discuss spirituality around her.
We don't have to discuss the faith around her. As for these others, getting upset at Christmas decorations, crucifixes, holiday greetings, carols and other signs of the faith, I wonder why. If you are not interested, why pay so much attention to it? They are actively against the faith because they are resisting it instead of being indifferent towards it. I am not against the Baha'is or Buddhists. I do not spend my time worrying about what they do. Perhaps they are less public about it.
The Jews in our neighborhood are not. They are not forceful but do not shy away from their holiday celebrations or attendance at synagogue. Their presence in the city is felt. Doesn't bother me, I have better things to worry about. I don't focus on what doesn't concern me. Christianity doesn't concern atheists. They should focus their attention elsewhere. It is not like its down South where it is pushed on you.

I am so glad you clarified fundies.
In my opinion, all of the bible was written by men who invented and fabricated and lied. Jesus was a great teacher and his message was twisted from enlightenment to salvation from sin.
Atheists can read the bible without seeing it through eyes tainted by brainwashing. There are many wonderful and intelligent Christians who are also knowledgeable about the bible and all its possible meanings.

it's not hard to read the Bible and create your own understanding, especially if your whole purpose is to denounce it. I've read the Bible and even though I think a lot of things seem like they shouldn't be wrong, I have faith that God knows best, and I try not to do them, and I ask for forgiveness if I do. Just like kids and their parents, kids don't always know or understand the reason behind the parents requests. I have faith in God, Jesus, and the Bible.

They don't. It seems to make more sense to those who are seeking to find fault with the Scriptures and with Christians because they are looking for someone to validate their points of view. Often atheists who seem to "understand" scripture better than Christians are people who are taking the Bible out of context to prove their point. While many Christians do the same thing, the difference is that when atheists do this, it usually is to try to use the Bible against itself, rather than what many of us Christians tend to do, which is to use the Bible to prove a point on our agenda which may or may not be motivated by a desire to do good. Anyone who truly seeks to understand the Bible is not going to pick it apart and use it against itself because the Bible is strong enough to stand on its own merits.

Many of them *think* they have an understanding of it, but really don't.
BTW:
Not all Christians are "Christian Fundies" with a literal, one-dimensional view of the Bible. Try discussing Scripture with a Christian who's not a Fundie.

Atheists, or people who were theists and then turned atheist read the Bible critically and read the good AND the bad parts (instead of cherry picking). Many atheists used to be theists until they read the holy book (e.g., the Bible) cover-to-cover with an open mind.

Because christians throw quotes and misquotes from the bible left and right at us, so someone of read the thing, don't believe it, and use it back at them. The problem is, these christians don't even know what they're talking about and all they do is parrot the conservative right and what they tell them to say.

If you consider an atheist who claims that the Bible speaks of four-legged birds as a knowledgeable atheist, then yea, I guess you're right.
