I heard that if you get your tonsils removed when older, it hurts more is that true? I am 22 years old and stronly considering getting mine removed because they are huge and often get infected. My doctor told me that they usually don't remove tonsils from adults because it is too painful, why is that? Is there no hope for me and my tonsils getting removed?
Thanks

Yes I have heard this also. Knew two women who had it done when they were older. One was 20 and one was in her late 20s/early 30s. Both of them lost weight and their recovery was longer than a child's is. I had mine out when I was 7 and it was no big deal.

I believe it would be worth it. How much time do you have to take off work or school each year because of tonsillitis? It might be worth to get it over once and for all.

If you decide to pursue this, you need to make an appt. with a surgeon. He/she can give you some tips to shorten your recovery time. A surgeon would be better equipped to give the whys or why nots for surgery.

As far as what your doctor told you, it is common knowledge that this surgery is rougher on adults than it is on children.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I dont know if it is worse when older, probably just more Inconvenient to us...but I still have mine at 47! I too went through a lot of illnesses and tonsilitis and swollen glands many times a year through out my childhood and into early adulthood. I no longer get tonsilitis and havent for a long long time now!
Try holding on just a bit longer...you can keep yours also! I had an old remedy that seemed to work for when I was desparate with them:
glycerine and iodine. Go to the drugist's or walmart, etc and pick up a tiny bottle of iodine and a larger bottle of glycerine, the kind that you can put on your skin.
Take it home, put about one teaspoon of glycerine in a tiny cup and add about 2 drops of iodine and stir it. Then take a q-tip swab and "paint" your tonsils with it. It tastes SWEET so that is not a problem...seemed to work for me! give it a try...cant hurt.

it is true that the operation does get worse as u get older. however i had mine removed when i was 23 and although painful for around 2 weeks it is not much worse pain than having tonscilitis in the first place. so if u rhaving regular infections then you should keep going to see ur doctor on each occasion this happens. he cannot refuse you being refferred if you are having regular problems. you will then be put on a waiting list to have them removed, i had to wait around a year, hope this info helps.

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.

Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.

What kind of doctor would tell their patient that? I doubt that is the case.
