When someone is really down low they are said to be "in the gutter". As far down as he can go.
God is talking to satan here. Satan was the highest of angels in the bible. Beautiful, covered in jewels and loved by God. (Isaiah). When he rebelled God took all that from him. He became twisted and ugly. Crawling low instead of being high in heaven. Instead of streets of gold, left in the dust. For all of his days, eternity.

(Genesis 3:14) And Jehovah God proceeded to say to the serpent: “Because you have done this thing, you are the cursed one out of all the domestic animals and out of all the wild beasts of the field. Upon your belly you will go and dust is what you will eat all the days of your life.
Snakes have always crawled. A fitting description of the actions of Satan since he decided to disobey God./

Yes, it's very comonly believed that the serpent in Genesis 3:14 was probably a lizard - a dinosaur. A great resource for the science of this creation is Dr. Kent E. Hovind. Here's his website. I strongly recommend his DVDs. They are wonderful, and they very intelligently answer the questions about evolution vs creation:

Well, if they weren't legs, they certainly had some mechanism quite unlike they are now.
Actually, you will never get better answers to Q's like that than via this book.
The author uses those very sections of the Bible and tests them scientifically to prove the following:
Author-scientist, Denis Towers, recently made a discovery and reported his 9 year study and evidence of it - scientific evidence that proves the Adam and Eve Biblical story and categorically disproves evolution simultaneously, in a book released this year, in fact, via Xulon Press.com [apparently, also available through amazon.com].
It's called 'TWO BIRDS ... ONE STONE!"and proves that the cursed snake is diametrically opposite to man in every aspect - both, behaviorally and via applied anatomy.
This of course, proves the Adam and Eve story, wherein the snake directly opposed God and man!
It is a most fascinating, powerful and convincing book!

007 is right on. The only thing I can bring to the table just adds to his witness. The term serpent as used in Genesis is Hebrew # 8314 in the Strong's Concordance it means Seraphim , a high ranking order of angels. And that is exactly what Satan was. In fact satan was guarding the throne of Christ along with Michael. Then he fell in love with his own intelligence , and it is going to cost him his life.

This curse was not upon the animal that Satan used but upon Satan who is called the "original serpent" because of his choosing to use this animal in deceiving Eve, His "eating: dust refers to his being conquered or biting the dust.

From what I have read, it leads me to believe that the snake that is here now is not the same snake in the garden. The snake that we have now is because of it's curse
