Probably. I don't know what a coward is for sure.

I've been in situations that I did not expect to survive, but felt no great degree of fear at the time. The only real fear I've felt has been for others that I love.

Lacking fear does not make one a hero. Doing your duty while experiencing extreme fear may be. If someone experiences extreme fear, and runs away, does that make them a coward?

Or does turning your back on getting into a dangerous situation without ever facing it make a coward (such as people who go AWOL in noncombat situations)?

These days the answer to that question would be a resounding yes. We no longer live in the time when serving your country meant fighting as a soldier. These days there are tons of background support jobs for "cowards" as you put it to do. If you know a coward that is considering a military career I would suggest that they go for it, if they think that they can make it through basic training that is. I know that I would be a better man today if I had gone into the military straight out of high school rather than going to college. I might have come out with something positive. Instead I came out of it at a loss. I lost a whole lot of my parent’s money. I lost a few years of my life and the only positive thing, I lost my virginity, but I'm kind of hoping that I can find that somewhere soon (how many years is the statute of limitations on virginity - it's been about 7 years).

Well thats an odd question.
I think anyone who joins the service, and the Marine Corp in general is not a coward by default .
Once you are in I guess you can turn afraid but I would never say you are a coward. Fear is a normal reaction and being put in a position of bodily harm is a valid fear.
Being fearful and being cowardly is not the same thing .
You can be afraid while doing your duty ...that is being fearful.
Or you can deliberately not go to someones funeral because you cannot face the pain. That is cowardly .
If you are currently active in the corps then thank you for your service and I am confident you will not be cowardly in your duty

I have heard that the definition of courage is when YOU are the only one who knows how scared you are.

So, yes, you can be a United States Marine and experience great fear... tremendous fear... But, by joining the Marines in the first place, there is no way you could ever be defined as a coward.

I doubt it. The difference in a coward and a hero is not very much. A coward is only someone that can not overcome his fears and just surrenders. A hero is someone that has the same fears as the coward but meets them head on, regardless of the consequences.
