Looking to make a piece of folk art out of a wooden box... Want it too look like a old treasure chest.. Not metal antiquing, I just spent money on that and am going to have to find a project for..

If it has carving on it, paint it with very muted colors. Then thin some dark brown paint and paint it over the original colors, very quickly. Then wipe it off the relief areas of the carving, leaving it in the crevasses. It creates a very nice antiqued look.

You need a special kind of antiquing paint. Just put it over/under (can't remember which) your wet paint and it will crackle it. In fact, I think it's called crackle finish.
