I like to go raccoon hunting with my buddies, but none of us ever tried raccoon is it worth trying.

Sure, they sorta taste like chicken, but different.

A raccoon is a cousin to the bear. The meat is very dark and can be somewhat greasy depending on how it is prepared. I always quarter the coon, remove the fatty " Kernel" from under its front arm ( armpit). Then I get a pot of water boiling and cut up one apple and one orange, the meat, and boil it all together. There will be a good bit of fat foam as there is when you par-boil pork ribs. I boil the meat until it is virtually done, about an hour. Then I use and electric skillet and season, flour and fry it on both sides to give it some color.

The meat is pretty rich, even after all that boiling. I would rather have venison back-straps but coon is plenty good enough.

I used to have game dinners for friends and coworkers. It usually included coon along with venison, squirrel, rabbit, duck, pheasant and sometimes muskrat legs ( which are very good but also rich and very dark.)

Properly prepared, raccoon is good eating

Here is a recipe that my Big Mama used to cook so I don't have exact measurements for anything.

Start with at least one fat young coon. (Just skin the tough old boar coons and feed the carcass to the hounds.) Skin him and cut him up in to serving sized pieces. Be sure to wash the hair off.

Place the meat in a large pot or bowl and cover with water. Add a cup of white vinegar and a couple of teaspoons of salt. Let it sit overnight.

The following day, remove the coon from it's vinegar water bath and give it a good wash.

Then put the pieces in a large pot with some salted water and boil until the meat is nearly done. You'll have to keep testing the meat with a fork, but boiling for 15-20 minutes should be plenty, but start checking at about 10 minutes.

Remove the coon from the boiling water and let cool.

While the coon is cooling, get a large, preferably cast iron, skillet, and heat about an 1/2-inch to 1-inch of cooking oil to around 350* F.

Prepare a batter of milk, egg, salt, pepper, and whatever other spices trip your trigger. Use at least one cup of milk and at least one egg, adjust the amount of milk and egg depending on how many pieces of coon you are cooking.

Roll your parboiled coon pieces in flour, then in the batter, followed by another roll in the flour.

Drop the pieces into the hot oil a few pieces at a time. Don't put too many in at once or it will make the oil temperature drop too much.

Cover the skillet, and turn the pieces after 3 or 4 minutes. After both sides have cooked covered 3-4 minutes, remove the cover and cook until golden brown. It is just like frying chicken.

If you want to make gravy, pour off most of the grease, sprinkle in some flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the flour browns, add water and cook until the gravy thickens.

Serve it up with some biscuits, mashed potatoes, and your favorite vegetable. Be sure to let your kilt straps out notch before you sit down, it will be more comfortable by the time you finish.

Rockabilly is apparently confusing coons and possums. Possums are nasty, rat-like scavengers. The only way I'd eat one is if I caught it live and fed it for a month or so to clean out the system. Racoons are pretty omnivorous, but they are not scavengers. And like I said, coon is good eats.

eating a raccoon sounds nasty, gross, and sick nasty=]....eating some animals is wrong....and so is humting them just for fun or for their skin. what if you were the raccoon and the raccoons were you. would you want them to hunt you down, kill you, see if you taste good, then reject you cuz you don't taste good and throw you into an unknown place? don't think so. i personally would not eat a raccoon, especially if i don't even know if i like it or not. why waste another form of life???

I had a brother in law that cooked barbecued raccoon every Christmas but I never would try it.

I haven't had it but if I shot one then yeah I'd probably give it a try. Been meaning to get me a few groundhogs heard they're good. Hey, if it's that bad feed it to the dogs, your still using the meat and your saving money on dog food. Either way your winning

usually i prefer to eat some kind of fish .but i like to eat raccoon and i think it have best taste when you eat a glass of wine whit that.

It is actully good. You need to get a little one though. It is like eating ground hog. The little ones tast the best. Fry them up with flower, salt, pepper, and old bay. It taste good.

When cooked right coon taste a bit like pork or beef. a little gamier. I've smoked it.. Best with some good hickory and apple to sweeten it a bit.

It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's not the best either, not by far. I've eaten opossum, groundhog, and racoon, and they all suck. Very greasy. I'd recommend against it.

If you do, eat it while it's hot, or the tallow on the roof of your mouth will be quite distasteful. It beats going hungry, but not by much.
