I am moving into a new house in the next few months.. and have NO idea what I am going to do about furniture. Anyone have any ideas of cheap/creative pieces I can make or buy to fill my house up?! Thanks!

You can get cheap furniture from discount stores, thrift stores, yard sales, dumpster diving (some college students do it!) etc.

Or you can make furniture. Of course there is the classic board and cinder block bookcase. If you are pretty handy, you can get some plans to make a piece of furniture, and buy the wood to build it yourself. If not, you can buy DIY furniture from places like IKEA where you have to assemble it yourself, which is not so bad for a table but can get tedious for something with a lot of drawers.

Yes! Right now - next few days - start driving around the college campus and look beside the dumpsters. As the colleges get out and students go home for the summer, the ones from other countries leave their furniture, bikes, microwaves, etc. behind because they can't take it on the planes with them. My niece just got an almost new bike from a fellow student who was returning home to Japan. She saw him take it to the dumpster and offered to buy it - he told her she could have it b/c he could not take with him. Her cousin got a sofa and chair, as well as desk and lamp the same way from some kid in engineering. Call it "dumpster diving" or whatever you want - I had no idea hw much they throw out until I heard my nieces and nephews talking about it at a mothers day dinner yesterday.

Check out the freecycle website in your area; you might find good stuff absolutely free. A futon is always a good thing to have; doubles as couch/bed. Papason chair from Pier I imports is very comfortable, and mine lasted for over 10 years and many moves. Paint boards and make bookcase w/ cinderblocks or glass blocks. No need to fill your house up; just get what you really need; you'll be glad when it's time to move that you don't have a ton of stuff. Fresh paint on old stuff is the way to go.

An idea for storage and surface at the same time. Get a couple of two-drawer filing cabinets and make a desk top for them out of either plywood or . . . you could go to a glass-making shop and have a piece of glass cut and beveled to fit the top. This would make a nice-looking and useful desk with some storage for you!
