My dog, which is very well behaved in all other areas, does not like other dogs sniffing her butt of any where near it. She usually jumps a bit, tucks her tail, and then sits down away from the dog... but sometimes she turns to face the dog and growls or even snaps! She's friendly to dogs besides then, playing well and has never actually bitten a dog or a person other than gentle play bites.
She also doesn't seem to have dominance issues as she lets other dogs eat out of her bowl and play with her toys, and lets people pet her and take food and treats away from her. She is not allowed on furniture and sleeps on the floor. She's a standard poodle (fyi) and is 5 years old.

I'd like to say, "hey! I wouldn't want someone sniffing my butt either!" and use that as the reason why... but this is what DOGS DO! it seems normal for canines. she does it to other dogs! it worries me cause i don't want other owners to get mad and I don't want her to be showing aggression

My dog was quite offended the first time another dog tried to sniff her...she immediately sat down, and looked over her shoulder at the other dog, as if to say..."how rude!" Maybe she's just protecting her dignity! I wouldn't worry about it...it sounds like she is very adjusted otherwise.

A dog's sense of smell is as useful to them as our sense of sight is to us. Just like how we can tell a lot about people from their facial expressions and the way they dress, dogs can tell a lot about a person from sniffing their butt. Also, disgusting as it is, dogs may tend to go for the crotch area on a female because that area smells strongest due to pheromones released during 'that time of month.' This is also why dogs tend to sniff at other dogs' poop when you are taking them for a walk - they can tell a lot about the dog that was there before them.

Hey hun! My dog (may her rest in peace) used to do the same exact thing! At first we didnt think anything of it because she was always happy otherwise but as she got older we got nervous so we asked her vet about it. The vet basically told us that it was normal. He said that alot of female dogs hate it when any dog is around that area. Not because of anything in particular he said it could be because it makes her nervous because she cant see what is going on back there, or maybe its because she feels violated almost. So he had suggested that when we have her with other dogs to just let the other owners know before hand. Also not to yell at her if she snaps at another dog. The other dogs will be able to handle themselves. Anytime it happened with my dog and she snapped at another dog the other one kinda was like whoa ok I wont sniff her there LOL So I would just kinda watch her and make sure she doesnt get any worse. Next time you go to the vet just ask him/her a few questions :) Good luck!

The only way to stop it is to keep her away from other dogs, but I think that would be the least of my worries, be thankful she doesn't have any major issues! The butt sniffing thing is just the nature of a dog!

Shes just an old fashioned girl. I don't see anything wrong with that. Dogs can smell another dogs rear from a distance. There is nothing wrong with her not wanting another dog going where no dog should go.

Well, what can anyone online do about that? Did we need to know about that?

She's a smart dog. Some people should be as smart.

HaHa!!! All I have to say is this: Would you want someone sniffing your butt? Chances are, you'd get a little snippy, too!
