I have recently moved into a house with yard. I have two dogs who did not have any fleas when we moved here, now I have found a couple on them so I need something that will get a jump on the problem before it gets worse. Any suggestions would be most appreciated...

Forget the sprays and powders, there's a liquid form, we call it "MALAWASH" here, you dissolve it in a bucket of water and pour over the dog and let the dog dry normally, no towel drying. We have racing dogs and that's what we use. NO FLEAS! Also you can pour this stuff around the yard, into cracks in the ground, and wash their bedding in it! It's brilliant to erradicate fleas!

I use a powder that you shake on your floors. I put it down last year and my dog still doesn't have fleas. You can put it on furniture to. One thing though the can doesn't tell you is you need to open the windows when you rub it in because it will create a fog of the dust. It might be good to wear a mask to. I have also treated my yard. Advantage and frontline work good also. My vet has also told me that there is no such thing as a flea dip for them and that all that they do is get flea shampoo lather it up good and leave it on for 30 min. then rinse. I've tried this and it works. Sargeants makes a better shampoo than hartz. I can't remember exactly what its called but it has a gold cap and Sargeants makes it. The active ingredients are stronger than the others. They also have some kind of things that you can plug into an outlet and its supposed to get rid of them whether they work or not I don't know. I would put that shake carpet stuff down and wash my dog. The frontline and advantage are nice but they are pricey. The shake stuff and the shampoo are under 15 dollars thats your best bet. The carpet stuff is made by sargeants its called Gold flea and tick powder and it has a citrus sent. Good luck

For both prevention and treatment, I would suggest using one of the vet products: Frontline, Revolution, Advantage, or Advantix (assuming you don't have cats if you use Advantix). In addition, you may want to ask about Capstar, which is supposed to kill all the fleas on your pet very quickly and can be used in conjunction with one of the other medications. The others will kill existing fleas a little more slowly and last about a month. Some will also kill flea eggs or larva and other pests as well (Revolution, for example, is a heartworm preventative as well).

If you have smaller dogs, you may want to ask your vet about splittling a large dog dose between the dogs to save money. The same stuff is used regardless of size, but your vet will know the exact amount needed for the size of your dogs.

In addition to flea medications, you will want to vacuum daily, paying careful attention to the areas where your dogs sleep, and dispose of the vacuum bag immediately after vacuuming. Some people cut up flea collars and put them in the vacuum bag to help kill the fleas so they can't jump back out.

Since fleas are already present you need to use something like Frontline (anything from a vets) that both kills and prevents fleas. You'll need to spray your house too.

Once the fleas have been eradicated, there are several products available for prevention only. Program products sterilise fleas, you can get tablets or there is an injection you can have every 6 months.

However, personally I'd just stick with Frontline Plus - it treats the dog and the environment, it kills and prevents fleas. I've never understood the point in sterilising fleas, we're not trying to domesticate them! Just kill the buggers I say!

I have tried all the shampoos, dips, flea collars, etc. you name it I've tried it. The only thing that really works is a product called "Frontline Plus" that you purchase at the vet 's office. It is put on the dog once a month and it works! You will need to also ask about a little pill to give to the dogs before putting Frontline on them, it works by killing any fleas that are already on the dogs and then the Frontline kills fleas that get on the dogs once it is put on. You will need to redo the Frontline Plus each month. It really works.

I use seargants naturl flea drops and Program flea pill once a month. If your dogs have fleas already, you can give them a pill called Capstar everyday until the fleas are gone. I order mine on line at a 2 different web sites. You can get the Program once a month flea tablets @ drfostersmith.com and the Capstar every day flea pill @ petcarerx.com. They are safe to give together. My vet told me not to use flea shampoo. It is very bad for the dogs skn and it does not even get rid of the fleas. She said to use baby shampoo!
Hope this is helpful. Good luck. sasturner
