Like climbing a mountain or walking across a desert to get closer to enlightenment or find your soul?
Is there a single word for it?

From what I see in my dictionary, "pilgrimage" is nearly the opposite of what I am looking for.

It seems I'll have to make up my own word, since my spirituality has been evacuated of any religion

The word in Japanese is shugyo.

The wikipedia entry doesn't explain it 100% correctly. A shugyo can be viewed as a personal "trial by fire", different for every person, but with the defining characteristic of "pushing through" ones preconceived boundaries to arrive at a higher level than previously thought possible. A shugyo usually results in some personal transformation at a fundamental level.

A spiritual journey wouldn't really involve too much in the physical world. The only way we can find God is by studying his word the Holy Bible, and searching for the truth (John 17:3). Then it is God that finds us, and enlightens us to the truth (Acts 17:27).

Quest, pilgramage, vision quest, walk about, etc....
There are many words for a journey of enlightenment and the word of phrase used depends on your religion of choice
