I absolutely HATE people who say PitBulls should be done away with because they are "bred to kill". I'm sorry but where exactly do you think your dog came from? All dog's are "tamed" wild animals. I don't care whether or not they are domesticated or not. All dogs have the potential to be dangerous. I have a female pitbull and she's the most AMAZING dog ever! I also have a 3 year old daughter. I had no problem whatsoever with her being around my pit. I was more worried about her being around the neighbors chihuahua because it was constantly biting and nipping at her. BUT you never hear about any other breed attacking people. Dogs are taught! If the owner is not responsible with the animal then they shouldn't have it. I hate when people say "My family member was attacked twice by the same dog". Well if your idiot family member was attacked once you would think it would stay away from the dog! Pit bulls are naturally protective of family members and very territorial. No pit bull should ever be put down just because it's a pit. If that's the case then EVERY breed of dog should be done away with that way there won't be any problem with anyone getting bit. It's also really quite funny that Pit Bulls are rated one of the lowest in bite ratings and one of the highest in temperment. Nobody should blame a whole breed of animals for a few bad ones. That's like saying the whole human race should be wiped out because of the possibility they could become deranged murderers. It doesn't make any sense. Do some research!

I come from a country where pit bulls and tosas are banned. I have nothing against them, but unfortunately they seem to attract the wrong kind of people for these kind of dog.

Pit bulls tend to be dog-aggressive, which is understandable considering what they were originally bred for. Pit bulls also give very little warning when they attack and once they attack, they do not stop. Also the build and bite of the dog is one created to inflict the maximum damage of an opponent. Again, nothing you can blame the dog for. A pit bull with no dog-aggresion and who warns and doesn't follow through on an attack is not one who would have lastest long in the old dog fighting pits.

Now combine this with owners who deliberately aggrevate and nurture the pit bull aggression and fighting instinct - and re-direct it from dogs onto humans and you have a dangerous cocktail. Or take an average owner, who refuses to acknowledge what the dog was originally bred for and take his/her precautions and you could end up with a dog who kills other people's pets. This happens quite often, where the other owner is often injured when trying to save his/her pet. I've lost count of the times I've heard pit bull owners refuse to admit that the breed has any kind of problems, because their dog is so nice - this can be frustrating and a bit frightening.

All dogs have teeth - and all dogs above a certain size can inflict serious damage. My own breed of dog is not one that is considered dangerous like the pit bull, but it is one that was bred to herd and protect livestock. As a responsible owner, it is my job to be aware of the dog's protective instincts and take my precautions by training the dog to trust my judgement and my commands, because the dog might not be able to tell the difference between a rapist and the new neighbour.

I don't believe in bans, but in education. Even if you manage to enforce a ban, the banned dog will merely be replaced by another breed. All dogs can be abused until they reach a point where they become dangerous. A dog license for all challenging breeds would be ideal in my opinion. What seemed to happen after the pit bull ban was that the dog became more attractive for the very type of people who shouldn't own this kind of dog, because it was "cool" and so "dangerous" it got banned, and the number of illegally imported dogs (often from puppy mills) exploded.

Pit bulls were not bred to be human aggressive and they have a very high pain tolerance, which are both good traits in a dog breed, and I'm confident that such a dog can be a lovely, trustworthy pet in the right hands. So to me, it's the wrong type of owners that create the problem and that's where the problem needs to be addressed. Unfortunately governments tend to focus on the dogs and many regular pit bull owners tend to ignore the fact that breed is genetically disposed to certain problem behaviours - none of this is in the breed's best interest in my opinion. I personally long too see an open, objective dialogue without the "killer dog" hysteria on one side and the defensiveness on the other side.

Ignorance spreads fear ....

I can't believe that even vets spread ignorance. ANY large dog can be "deadly", as your vet phrased it.

I have an American Pit Bull Terrier. I am a respectable, intelligent, mother of three and grandmother of three. I believe I made a sound decision, when I decided to adopt a Pit Bull.

As much as many hate to admit it, it IS the owners that make these beautiful dogs aggressive. When one is attacked by a Pit Bull, it amazes me that humans admonish the whole breed and want them banned. Could you imagine if this were the same for every other breed on the planet? There would be NO dogs left, NONE ... virtually EVERY dog on the face of the earth would be put to death!

True, years ago Pit Bulls were used for fighting ... which means they were DOG aggressive, not human aggressive ... in fact, they were bred so as to NOT bite their human owner, while the owner broke up a fight between two Pit Bulls. NOW ... thanks to strict laws, Pit Bulls are rarely seen in a ring fighting.

To say that a dog, Pit Bull or otherwise, is born aggressive is pure ignorance. Some Pit Bulls are TAUGHT to be aggressive. Put it this way ... do Labrador Retrievers automatically know what they are supposed to do? No ... they have to be taught to retrieve a bird once it's been shot. If people think it's "in their blood" to just jump up and retrieve the bird, they had better pack a lunch ... because they'll be in for at very, very long wait.
.
When dogs are put in the hands of sadistic owners, the dogs have nothing to do, but what they are told to do, that, or die at the hands of their owners. If a person was beaten beyond belief, then told to do something they know is wrong, but, have to do it or die ... would you blame them? Or the abuser? It's sad that humans make such allowances for themselves ... but God forbid if any other living being does the same.

Something else to think about ... is this why Pit Bulls were used in Search and Rescue, in 9/11? Is this why they are used as K-9 and therapy dogs? .... Because they are vicious, blood thirsty killers? Please ...

Can you people imagine, if ALL dog attacks, that result in a mortality or serious injury were published in the news? Good gawd ... there wouldn't be any room for any other news! The media instills and then thrives off of people's fears ... they instill ignorance, and some people are just oblivious to this. Sad, extremely sad. :(

Don't hate the breed, hate those who have abused these dogs to the point of aggression. If people want someone to blame and view as a monster ... LOOK IN THE MIRROR, IT'S THE HUMAN RACE. Please, veiw this video ...

I'm a dog lover and I believe it's not a bad breed - it's bad owners. Even those who say oh my dog is friendly with the family - but has there been generalization so that the dog gets use to society? some don't even walk their pits - yes they love the family and is loyal but they are not socialized - obedience training is a must too - the problem is there are to many ppl using this dog for fighting, guarding, or just ones who can not handle them or spend the time with them to take them out. pits generally are very loving dogs - if we get rid of pits, what's next? rotties? Caucasian mountain dog which many have not heard of are strong powerful and powerful they will also protect the family even if it cost them their lives - they are born with agression as pups - but because they are not as well known or popular they have fewer attack reports on them - any dog can be vicious even a toy yorkie but since they're small they're more manageable - whereas pits are a stronger breed kind hearted ppl take them in without understanding how to handle them.

They are very sweet dogs! They get banned because of horrible people who raise them to be vicious. Any dog raised like that will be a threat to somebody at some point. But a dog with a loving caring owner will be very sweet mannered. It's a shame that a whole breed of dog gets blamed for the bad people who don't treat them right. I wish people were better informed about the subject, because then they wouldn't make up such irrational things like banning the breed.

OH I LOVE THE BEAUTIFUL BABIES

I wan to own a pure bred one some day. I own a pit boxer mix and he takes the pit looks more. He is such a sweetie.

They need to look at other breeds that are becoming more agressive also. Even though Pit Bulls Were bred to attack, for the power and muscle, but not for dog fighting. Dogs were trained to attack bulls to tenderize the meat before being killed and sold in market, thats what was belived until they found no proof into that theory so with those dogs trained to attack, the owners turned to dog fighting.

Hate their history, but they are sweet dogs if you get to know them with the right owners and proper knowing of that dogs family back ground such as agression behavior.

I think the agression can be bred out of them if someone took the time to do proper matching with well tempered dogs.

I DISLIKE PITBULL HATERS. YOU GUYS NEVER HAD ONE BEFORE OR adopted ONE OR MAYBE A BAD EXPIERENCE. banning a pitbull? its like saying your banning the dog of breed you have!! its not the dog's fault. it the owners. PitBull should be a challenging dog to breed because most owner's can't handle it. i love pitbull, you guys are just seriously being over reacting.

No it is because of stupid people owning dogs they shouldn't. Pit bulls can make fine pets, socialization and training are a must. There are about 5 or so million pit bull types in this country if they were as vicious as all the media hype, then there would be an epidemic of dog attacks. Pit bulls were bred to be fighting dogs but any dogs that were human aggressive (HUMAN AGGRESSION IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM ANIMAL AGGRESSION) were killed. Many, however, can do well with other dogs. Breed Specific Legislation blames the dog not the owners. I love pit bulls.
