I tried adjusting my sear spring by hand with little luck.

Bound's hubby here:

An M1911 should not be firing in bursts! Are you shooting reloads or factory ammo?

The first thing you should check is your ammo, especially if you are shooting reloads. Are the primers fully seated in the brass?

Next, after you eliminate the ammo as the problem, you should look to your pistol. What weight do you have your trigger pull set? If the trigger pull is less than 4.5 pounds, you are inviting burst fire. Also, do you have an adjustable trigger? If so, perhaps the creep/overtravel is set too low.

If your trigger is not adjustable, you now need to look at the sear, not the sear/mainspring! It is possible that with the volume of ammo you have put thru your pistol, the sear surfaces may have worn and rounded. you need to check the engagement surfaces on the trigger, sear and hammer.

If the trigger components do not seem to be out of spec, then you need to check the slide "interconnect". This is especially critical if your pistol has a Series 80 style trigger assembly. If the interconnect is worn or broken, it may disengage the trigger before the slide is fully in battery.

Honestly, the trigger assembly is the heart of the pistol, and very touchy ... kind of like heart surgery! I would take your 1911 to a competent pistol smith that is known for their work on triggers. Bank on their experience and you will have your pistol back faster than you would expect.

Also, never "tinker" with the sear/main spring ... to do so can actually reduce the tension leading to a dangerous situation.

Another possibility could be your firing pin. When cleaning your 1911, have you removed the firing pin and spring and given them a thorough cleaning? If the pin and/or spring is dirty and gummed, the firing pin could be protruding through the firing pin hole, and detonating primers as the slide closes in battery. Make sure you also clean the firing pin channel in the slide ... this is a place where Q-tips and pipe cleaners come in very handy!

Good luck!

I would replace, the following just because rockisland parts are made on some remote island i think phillpeans and imported by auto ordance.... BUt anyway. Sounds like you have a sear problem its eaither damaged or dirty.
I would buy...
Wilson combat
Sear, Trigger assemably, mag release (i had my rock island mag release break for no aparent reason) main return/ recoil spring.
This will make the rockisalnd 1911 20 times better....

spankadoodle.

Take it to a gunsmith, sear and hammer engagement surfaces are rounded, three or four finger sear spring is out of adjustment and possibly the disconnector could have issues also caused by sear spring.
Ammo has nothing to do with AD, accidental discharge.

You need to replace the sear itself. The full-c o c k notch is probably worn to the point that after it gets good and dirty, it will go full auto on you.

If you don't fix the problem, you will eventually have a pistol that empties itself with one trigger pull, and they climb like a striped-arsed ape.

First, be aware that you are currently in possession of an illegal machine gun, until you get it fixed. (I don't normally pass on doomspeak like that, but I have a cousin who was arrested for dope possession and further charged with an illegal machinegun for a slamfiring SKS.)
Bound's Hubby has some good answers, but the best one, I fear, for your legal protection, is to take the weapon IMMEDIATELY to a qualified gunsmith.
