Are We Free? Do We Have Free Will? If God exercises providential control over all events are we in any sense free?

The answer depends on what is meant by the word 'free'. In some senses of the word 'free', everyone agrees that we are free in our will and in our choices. Thus, when we ask whether we have free will, it is important to be clear as to what is meant by the phrase.

Scripture nowhere says that we are free in the sense of being outside of God’s sovereign control or of being able to make decisions that are not caused by anything. (This is the sense in which many people seem to assume we must be free.) Nor does it say we are free in the sense of being able to do right on our own apart from God’s power.

BUT, WE ARE nonetheless FREE in the greatest sense that any creature of God could be free: we make willing choices, choices that have real effects. We are aware of no restraints on our will from God when we make decisions.

We must insist that we have the power of willing choice; otherwise we will fall into the error of fatalism or determinism and thus conclude that our choices do not matter, or that we cannot really make willing choices.

On the other hand, the kind of freedom that is demanded by those who deny God’s providential control of all things, a freedom to be outside of God’s sustaining and controlling activity, would be impossible if Jesus Christ is indeed continually carrying along things by his word of power (Heb. 1:3). If this is true, then to be outside of that providential control would simply be not to exist!

An absolute freedom, totally free of God’s control, is simply not possible in a world providentially sustained and directed by God himself.

Yes we have free will. you would not be able to ask your question about it if you did not. THAT is the beauty part of it.

Free will is about choice. as is any faith that you can argue.
men and women are not driven to do some things. we each have a choice in the matter. Ultimately, it is the choice between good and evil. And God gives us every opportunity to make the right choice. what would be the point of free will if he never let us make the decision between right and wrong?

then sometimes try to argue that the "devil made me do it." that is an excuse. The devil may take his every waking moments providing temptation and such, but he cannot make us give into that temptation. we must choose to make it ourselves. Why? because God granted us free will.

At the same time, God is always trying to GUIDE us into making the right choices. but he cannot make us. because he has given us the right to choose between them.
NOTE: this is not a mistake on God's part. this comes with the gift of free will. responsibility of one's actions, and learning that God knows what is best for us)

as for knowing what we are going to do before we do it. Well, God is all knowing, correct? So therefore it is logical to say that God knows every possible outcome that follows every decision that we make in life.

Think of life as a great and lengthy dirt road. And we are those that walk along that pathway. As with any road, there are forks and crossroads in it. It branches off into different directions. And when we come to those crossroads, we are to decide which way to go.

But the thing is this. We do not know what the path will travel over. But God does. he knows what tribulations and what niceties we face on the different paths of our lives. And he tries to guide us into taking the right path, that is honest, fruitfull, and just.

However, the road of life does have an end. A threshold called Death, in which the great and small, rich and poor, good and evil, must one day pass.
And after we pass this threshold, we arrive at our final destination, where eternity will be spent.
Depending on the choices of where we decide to go in life, our final destination is one of two places: Heaven or Hell.

The commandments, Christ's teachings, the Koran, the Torah (whichever one you follow) THE VERY WORD OF GOD; would be fruitless and pointless if we did not have free will. These are the road maps that God provided the world to find the better of the Final Destinations of Life.

even when a person makes the wrong decisions, he can still decide to step back on the right path. Death is the final chance to make the step.

There is the past of course. But there is not certain future. There is no fate. There is no destiny. There is only God the Absolute.

Free will is our greatest gift, yet our darkest burden. God knows our futures (note that it is plural). But which one we choose to go towards, is ours to decide. All because, we have something called Free Will.

don't believe that we don't.

God Bless.

Remove the supernatural from the equation for a moment.

If there is nothing supernatural (no God, no heaven or hell, no soul, and no afterlife), then what is left is the natural universe.

There is nothing that exists in the universe that does not have interactive qualities. In such an existence, each atom is responding to forces put upon it and in turn effecting other atoms and other forces. Your DNA helped produce you, your experience in utero and in early childhood probably help cast in stone much of the assumptions you will carry throughout your life. Brain scans show decisions being made in the brain seconds before we are aware consciously of choosing.

In other words, there is precious little evidence that any mechanism for free will exists in the natural world. And if somehow the "soul" was allowed to re-enter the discussion, you would have quite a bit of difficulty describing how something from outside nature interacts with nature.

Here is a paradox that always gets Christians to fall flat on their face and show how they are not thinking.

The all knowing nature of this God means that this God would by defination know every single choice we would ever make.
However since we are bound by time and do not know what tomorrow will bring we think from our point of view that we have freewill.

However in light of the big picture and God's all knowing nature what we think is freewill is actually a delusion! There can be no freewill with an all knowing God.
Reason is simple to assume that you can do something or make a choice that God doesn't know before hand that you will make assumes that this God is not all knowing or is for some really silly reason knowing the outcome but keeping it from himself to highten his own surprise.

I know this last is really stupid but I have actually heard Christians suggest it! Needless to say when i saw it I laughed my balls off!

Read your question over, think about what you are saying, How is that free will, he would be forcing you then..
You want God to make it easy for us all so everyone goes to heaven, you want a God that accepts everything and everyone and still allow you to go to heaven..
And because he doesn't well that isn't fair and I won't serve a God like that.. your choice..
Well it doesn't work that way. God loves you , and he loves everyone, BUT you choice..you know what is wrong and you know what is right.. Choice who you will serve, it is not forced on anyone..
And if you choice God and follow his will for your life, your reward is heaven...
I don't have any problem with this concept, I don't see why you do, But then again you want to live in sin and still be allowed to go to heaven..so you made your choice..

We do have free will to do things. We have free will to do good or bad, but its the consequences that come up with our choices. God knows that we make mistakes all the time; no one's perfect. And God has given us a chance to confess it. To tell you the truth, I don't deserve to go to Heaven, and no one deserves to go to Heaven either. But God is forgiving, merciful and gives us chances. God has the power to do anything. He can take your life away right now if He wanted to, but I'm sure He has a purpose for you. There's a purpose for everything in this world, and God is in control of it. And yes you're right! God can see everything. He knows when you are sinning, and He knows when you are making a difference. God loves you, and I'm sure He has a lot in stored for you. I hope you can see that sometime if you haven't yet. God Bless!

It written in the sky and is seen among the stars the line of life born on a certain date according to astrologers and fortune tellers. Prophesy or prediction may be there just as a guide to one man's journey but a script "not necessarily" to be strictly followed.
God knows when you were born that you have the roads to choose and follow in the right way so you can go to the destiny you desire. Your Free Will is the one that will decide your fate...whatever dreams you have, you can have it realized by making two choices,, One is to do it the right way and the other one is to take wicked way. Either of the choices, you may find yourself succeeding or you may find yourself failing both of which will be the consequence of the choice you make.
Some great men on earth has achieve world victories and fame through dubious and evil means and in the end it may seem that they died so horribly and humiliating. Yet, the lesson from their evil has taught many man a great lesson for people to choose to live the right way.
There are many good men that we see around us that lived a good life and have shown qualities of a leader but God may not choose them to lead a nation and prefer someone who may have a weakness in presenting himself to the people like David of Israel who was much younger than his brothers and no experience in the battlefield. He chose Moses to talk to Israelites and deal with the Paraoh about their plight out of Egypt when his tongue is not fit to talk.
The reason why He simply cannot throw away the bad seed as you may see around you, because he is there for you to learn how to defend yourself from people like him or how you can learn to do the good things. Do not worry about where his life leading to, worry about yours.

Since God is beyond time and space and everything is included in His Knowledge, He encompasses the past, present and future as a single, undivided point. For example: When you are in a room, your view is restricted to the room. But if you look from a higher point, you can see the whole city. As you rise higher and higher, your vision continues to broaden. The Earth, when seen from the moon, appears to be a small blue marble. It is the same with time. So, all time and space are encompassed by God as a single, undivided point, into which the past, present and future are united.

Since all time and space are included in God’s Knowledge as a single point, God recorded everything that will happen until the Day of Judgment. Angels use this record to prepare a smaller record for each individual.

We do not do something because God recorded it; God knew beforehand we would do it and so recorded it.

There are not two destinies: one for the cause, the other for the effect. Destiny is one and relates to the cause and the effect simultaneously. Our free will, which causes our acts, is included in Destiny.

God guides us to good things and actions, and allows and advises us to use our willpower for good. In return, He promises us eternal happiness in Paradise.

We have free will, although we contribute almost nothing to our good acts. Our free will, if not used properly, can destroy us. Therefore we should use it to benefit ourselves by praying to God, so that we may enjoy the blessings of Paradise, a fruit of the chain of good deeds, and attain eternal happiness. Furthermore, we should always seek God’s forgiveness so that we might refrain from evil and be saved from the torments of Hell, a fruit of the accursed chain of evil deeds. Prayer and trusting in God greatly strengthen our inclination toward good, and repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness greatly weaken, even destroy, our inclination toward evil and transgression.

Actually, i don't think that God knows everything that we're going to do before we do it. If he did, then that would be defying the whole concept of us having choice, which is the free will that God himself has given to us. But that's a really good question. If God really did know everything that we are going to do before we do it, then he may well have banished Adam and Eve from Eden before they ate the fruit of that tree.

You are wrong! God can read or see your hearth that’s why he can predict what you will be, but still you are the one who can decide what you will going to do into your life. God giving us a guide to what we should do. “Deu 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse: therefore choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed; “
