let me clarify, i am well aware of the constitution, and the treaty of tripoli. and do not agree that america is indeed a christian nation. but for thoes that claim that it is so.

If America is a Christian Nation. and one of the 10 commandments of the Christian religion is "thou shalt not STEAL" how do you reconcile the fact that America is built on land stolen from it's previous inhabitants?

It's a republic, not a theocracy.

My parents thought it was a Christian nation. So did my grandparents. My Social Studies teacher also labored under this self-same delusion.
When I sing the beautiful old anthem, "America the Beautiful" I still ask God to shed His grace on my country.
As far as I know, "In God We Trust" is still our national motto.
I always supposed that the Creator Who created all men equal and endowed them with inalienable rights was God.
I had the same notion about the blessings of liberty that we were supposed to have procured for ourselves and our posterity.
So did most of the adults around me growing up.
As far as I know, it has been our custom, until quite recently, to swear in court on a Christian Bible, to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God.
I was quite sure that was also a Bible the president put his hand on in his swearing in ceremony.
In my limited experience (after all, I'm only 56 years old...I won't be 57 until October) it's only been in the past few decades that anyone actually questioned the notion that America, the Land of the Brave and the Home of the Free, was a Christian nation.
Why should I let a bunch of 20-something yuppies change my opinions at this late date?
Seriously, where were most of you when my Dad was earning his purple heart in WWII? Where were you when my grandpa fought in WWI? My brother in Viet Nam? My son in Desert Storm? All of these men believed they were fighting "for God and country".
OH, and BTW, I am also descended from some of those "previous inhabitants". True, a good many Native Americans have been stirred up of late to remember old scars long healed...mostly those violent tribes in the south and western areas of the continent...but the majority of the Indians I know, who are from my home in upstate New York, are quite happy...and, amazingly, most of them also think that the US is a Christian nation.

Oh, yeah...you are so COOL...so YOUNG...so "with it"...
*sigh*
and you don't even realize that our culture is crumbling around you.
What will you do when Christianity is no longer there to watch over you?

Coming from a wiccan point of view...this country already is a christian nation.

If it was not the error of our forefathers regarding the first amendment, then I probably would have been burned on a stake a loong time ago. The reason why I say it is an "error" in the first amendment is because when they wrote it, they meant any denomination of Christianity (such as prodestant, catholic, quaker, the jewish etc.) but they did not specify this in the constitution. So luckily I am still here on an account of a loophole.

The other reason why it is a christian nation because our culture tends to only accept christian based religions. It isn't until about the past 40 years that we have made some progress in reversing this, but as you know, it is still a big topic (such as Bush trying to ban gay marriage because the bible says it's "wrong"). Even our money refers to God, and yes, the Christian one.

This is why they consider it a "christian" nation. Also, about your second comment on the tenth commandment....if you haven't noticed by now, A lot of Christians tend to use parts of the bible to justify their actions (NOT ALL CHRISTIANS....I'm not trying to offend anyone here). For instance, since the owners of the new world were considered to the explorers and settlers as "satan worshiping pagans" (savage was actually a word that originally described those who did not believe in the Christian god), so it was alright to kill, plunder, and rape these "heathens". Apparently, "thou shall not kill" and "thou shall not steal" only qualify if the person you are doing it to is christian.

America was founded on Christian principles and morals. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, just as two examples, were fine upstanding Christians who based their morals and life on the Holy Bible. And their for ran the country the same way.
What we see today is a nation trying to push God out of every aspect of our life. Take prayer out of schools; take the 10 commandments out of public view (so people don’t feel guilty in a court house) take the words “in God we trust” out of the pledge of allegiance. But when things like 9/11, columbine and Vergina Tech happen we shake our fist at God and say, “How could God let this happen?!!” Well, He was exactly were you wanted Him to be, as far away as possible. I’ve never seen random shootings in a school that teaches the Bible.
Yes, out nation is becoming less and less the nation it was a hundred years ago. But that just proves the more immoral we become, the more we want to push a Holy God further away so we don’t feel guilty about what we know is wrong. Abortion, gay mirage, sex before mirage… the list goes on.
Let me know what you think now.

Gee this Christian Nation just took a hit from their Pagan cousins when we got the Veteran's Administration to accept the Pentacle as the symbol of faith for Pagans and Wiccans.

"one nation, under God, indivisiable, with justice and freedom for all" the under God was added to the pledge in the 1950's. As a Pagan we fill that part with Goddess.

There are a lot of thou shalt nots that Christians use whenever they need to. I think that the Ten Commandments should be posted in the courts again, as long as they are followed to the letter! Just think of all those coveters... and no more capital punishment... what about Christians telling their understanding of Witches and Pagans. Think that is covered under bearing false witness!!! So lets get them Commandments tacked back up and see how long it takes for some poor shlub of a Christian to break one.

You will have to go back and read the book of Jeremiah and Jeremiah 15:1. There is a thing called jugdement with God. If a people hear the gospel preached to them and they do not repent. As a result of them not repenting, warfare, disease, captivity, pestilence and death will come upon you. Which is exactly what happened to the previous inhabitants. God will use one nation as instrument of His wrath to punish disobedient people. The Lord used king Nebudchanezzar as a instrument to punish the surrounding nations. In the process, the Lord set up Daniel and his friends in high places to continue to be a light unto the Jewish people. Similarly, God used the element of America which was evil and ungodly as a instrument to clear the way for His church to be established. God is sovreign over all and uses who He wants and how He wants to establish His Kingdom.

If you think America should not be a Christian country. Should we make murder and burglary legal? Sense they are 2 of the commandments? Don't want to violate separation of church and state that you hold so dearly. (When it suits your purpose)

i propose that the burden of proof is on christians to show that it is. IMO, the founders were pretty much brilliant. So if they had wanted a Christian nation, they would have made it pretty clear. Don't you think?
