Certainly! And many religions can be traced back to prior mythologies that were embellished and adopted as fact in later generations. Sad commentary on the human condition,

Technically, mythology IS religion. A myth is a religions story, any religious story. It's just a new thing to use the word myth to mean something not true. I think it's a Christian thing to consider "bible stories" above other religions "myths", even though they both serve the same purpose. So, to answer your question, mythology is a part of religion.

Maybe you have mythology confused with magic. Magic is trying to summon the supernatural and religion is trying to explain our existence using supernatural. People used to think that religion evolved from magic, but not most people say that the two live simultaniously.

If religion was a man, and mythology was an ape, are they related? Did they evolve from the same missing link? maybe they are just two branches from the same source.

Which religion? People thousands of years BC worshipped Baal. I'm not sure if Baal is now mythical or just simply historic. Many parallels of the Bible stories can be found in ancient Egyptian literature (3000 BC), like the story of Horus. Virgin birth and scores of other similarities, including names like Jospeh (Jo seth). Google "Horus" and it will surprise you. It did me. However, when I think of "mythology" I think of the Greek stories, like Medusa or Odysseus. The Greek and Roman gods don't really have much of a connection to the current Western religious paradigm. In a larger sense, though, it is all "mythology."

All religion IS mythology. It changes with time and circumstance, but it all comes down to the superstitious belief in spirits and gods.
