their righteousness was like filthy rags.... they were robed in white on the outside but inside was filled with dead bones
Luke 11:38-40 (New Living Translation)
His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom. Then the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and wickedness! Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside?
Matthew 23:25-27 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence! You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish and then the outside will become clean, too.
“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.

they were greedy broods of vipers, and hypocrites, because they built themselves up as righteous, but were actually only out for their own glory.not gods or jesus.much like our modern churches...can you think of some?i can..theyre quite big.
when jesus came along,he was reducing their status and strength among the jews.
