There are those that are nominal Christians and there are those that actually live as "little Christs" (hence the word: "Christian"). Did you decide to become an Atheist because of a Christian who said one thing and did another?

Paul S: I am here to say that, yes, there is too a polka dotted chimp on my head, and he's very offended at your statement. :)

Paul S. Unlike the chimp, God does exist. Some people in tribal lands would never believe we landed on the moon. Does that mean it didn't happen? Could you convince them it did? It's the same principle with God. You've put up a mental barrier so thick, that to you, God doesn't exist.

I accept, this was one of the reasons to quit the Catholic and all religions.
Do you think Jesus will be happy with the palace of the Vatican City or the Mega Churches (fast food type) of Florida? Huh? I don't think so.

As irritating as hypocritical Christians may be to Atheists, I think it is hubris on their part to believe that they would be the cause of Atheists not believing in a Supreme Being. Once again, Atheists make decisions based on their own beliefs and the world does not revolve around Christianity, contrary to what many would like to believe.

No, I never "became" an atheist, nor was it the result of hypocritical Christians. I don't claim to say "there is no god." I just do not "believe" simply because there is no reason to "believe." And also note that some ex-Christians convert to other religions rather than just abandon religion altogether.

The last time I went to church, I was twelve. Some of the leaders of the church were standing on the front steps cussing a blue streak. That was when I first dared to doubt Christianity. Don't get me wrong, that's not the only issue I have with Christianity, but it's what opened the door to doubt about a lot of things.

Yeah there are lots of hypocritical Christians out there. Hell i am one. No body - and i mean no body - is perfect except for the big man himself. You gotta cut some religious types a break if they are trying hard.

And besides - its not about the religion, nor the people in it. It is about your relationship with god and what you believe in your heart. Nothing is more important than that.

Addition:

Man are you guys obsessed with Christan bashing. Are we really all that bad? Also - I don't know about you but i am a mechanical engineer for a massive mining company and i am reasonably sure that i have a rather high IQ (sorry - i usually try to be modest :P) and i think that the belief in god is completely rational. How else do you explain the existence of anything? First law of thermodynamics - energy can never be created or destroyed. Also the fact that we are conscious indicates design to me. But i mean - its your call. This is only what i believe. Just please don't call us all dumb. Its offensive.

No, i became an atheist after i watched the Movie "Root of all Evil" By Richard Dawkins.

And that's when it became clear to me that the very Thought that a Deity exists is childish and delusional.

I just figured that it was time for me to grow up and stop playing with my imaginary friends :)

Well, that doesn't really sound like an atheist.
The overall hypocrisy of christianity may not show anything more than the impotency of christianity to have real and lasting effects on its adherents, but it doesn't necessarily say that there is no god.

I became an atheist because i dont believe in god.The fact that many of his fan club are outright wingnuts does not lend much strength to the existence of god either. And the fact that i have not seen anyone smote down by lightning bolts or somesuch, especially of those who probably deserve it,seals the dealfor me.

No. I became an atheist because it became obvious that God doesn't exist. Why would there need to be some weird psychological reason?

I don't believe in God for exactly the same reason that you don't believe that there's a polka-dotted chimpanzee dancing on your head.

I became an Atheist after studying the Bible and realizing it's mostly fiction and much of it is intentionally fake.

And Christians seem to be simpletons who are easily mislead by fakes and impostors, and the religion props itself up mostly through intentional deception.

I am happy that I am no longer one of them.
