I'm not gay expert but I think the answer has to do with perception. I think gays have been around and will be around for a long time to go. It just just that you never notice them before. If by holy land you mean places like the middle east then there is more reason not to have seen it before. In some places of the world they kill these kind of people. So, a gay person is not going to come out if he/she knows that it means death. Threat of death, however, does not make you normal. It just makes you hide. Again, they where always there.
