Earth, well humans for that matter, are such an insignificant part of this universe.

If there are planets that are billions of light years away and it would take us millions and billions of years to travel to them or even be able to see them .... why did god create them?

We are nothing. We are statistically nonexistant. If the universe were a number we would have been rounded off a long time ago.

This solar system, in turn, exists in a much larger galaxy made up of about 100 billion or 10^11 other star systems. To put that in perspective, finding the sun in our galaxy is about as easy as finding a specific grain of sand in all of California's coastline.

The people who followed the belief that a god existed did not know how insignificant they really were. They thought we were the center of the universe. Now we know this is not the case. We are so insignificant it's laughable.

So if god does exist, what is the purpose for this infinite amount of space? ....

Your thoughts largely reflect my own, although you've been more articulate in expressing them.

But sadly, when believers begin with the premise that God exists, they are forced to rob the universe of much of its grandeur. If their God is the creator, then human beings must be the pinnacle of his creation. Such cosmology is reflected in many of the answers they've left here for your question.

In truth, however, such egotistical thinking ranks all existence in an arbitrary and self-serving manner. The chances are astronomically greater (pun intended) that we are insignificant when compared to both the mind-numbingly large size of the universe and the relative minuscule nature of the globe we inhabit.

The saddest part of this is the way in which dialogue becomes nearly impossible. Experience strongly indicates that once a dyed-in-the-wool Christian starts discussing God in reference to creation, all scientific or fact-based discussions cease. From that point forward, we are thrust into a fantasy of a loving God who planned out the whole thing. By turning their eyes to God, they lose the mystery encompassed by our huddling together on an insignificant planet in a relatively unremarkable corner of the universe. And we have evolved into critters that can observe and interpret scientific data far beyond what we would need for our immediate survival and perpetuation as a species. In my mind, no idea of God can supersede the wonder contained in such a notion.

Well, space is finite, not infinite, but aside from that, who could possibly know the reason(s) for the universe? What's the purpose for human existence? Why is our blood red? Why do we think thoughts? Why is the sky high? Why do you talk so much? Why don't you shut up? (Sorry... that's taken from a Lou Reed song).

UPDATE: I almost forgot to answer your question (aside from asking more questions). It's called the anthropic principle. It's basically the scientific community's way of answering the question of "why". It says that the universe is the way it is, because were it any different, we wouldn't be here to ponder such questions.

What a great and interesting question! nicely technological information has mentioned the earth replaced into created with a huge bang and the ninety two factors of the universe has created each and everything so its somewhat tricky to have self assurance that the earth replaced into created by way of a god. yet till the tip comes, who is familiar with?? The Earth has been around for greater or less 13 billion years and theres not something in the bible approximately that? there replaced into not something related to the beasts that ran our cherished planet that are actually extinct. So all you god enthusiasts rather have been given to think of related to the info!!

He created to acommodate us.
In this material segment there are millions and billions of universes with trillions of planets and suns, stars and moons. But this whole material creation is only a fragment of the total creation. Most of the creation is in the spiritual sky.
From the spiritual universes, we desire leave the service of God and enjoy separated from Him. So He create these innumerable universes and innumerable planets within each universe, to be inhabited by different grades of living entities in different modes of nature according to our material desires.
The different planetary systems in outer space is meant to accommodate the different kinds of living entities, such as the human beings, those lower than the human beings, and the higher than human beings, for the requisite bodies of the conditioned souls.
And yes, we are so insignificant from the material point of view, but as spirit soul we are important as soon we reestablish our forgoten relationship with God. Just like a finger from the hand is cut of, is useless but as long is attached to the hand and body is very important, you can spend thousands of dollars to save it. Similarly, we are insignificant and useless when we are cut of from God.

Okay people listen up: hydrogen is the most common element in the universe. As far as matter is concerned, thats very, very little.

But there's radiation, solar winds, magnetic fields. Did you know what, bud? If Jupiter - yup, millions of miles away - if it had a magnetic field, it would be four times the size of the moon. There are countless asteroids, comets, satellites, and countless other solid or energetic materials that we know (or don't know!) that in turn make up matter (for instance, dark matter). What about black holes, singularities, the countless phenomenon that we see *daily* that makes science nonsense?

The purpose for this matter? Stability in this universe.

Is this supposed to be some 'proof there is no God'? I'm a convinced atheist, an astronomer, and to be honest, it's you that's laughable.

I totally disagree with your treatise. Man has been put on this earth and other worlds that Jesus Christ had created for the express purpose of allowing us to learn from our experiences and progress to the point of returning to the Father's presence.

We are most significant above all plant and animal life. Further, space can only be created if all the infinite matter is removed from it and God will not do that. He uses matter that is unorganized and creates from it worlds without number.

Mankind's salvation is the infinite and holy purpose of God the Father.

Well, for our species to explore and cause us to advance. I know for a fact that God wants us to be the best we can be so we can extend our limits, to leave us with questions without answers and reasons to be constantly questioning and improving. Oh by the way, I'm 13 and I came up with that answer. that question is also kind of like asking why God made air!

To get you to ask that very question. Think of it this way, if there wasn't that infinite amount of space (although technically, as space is expanding and it is quantifiable, if immense, it isn't infinite, but close enough for our purposes) would you ask such a question?

It can't be figured with the human mind. Our minds are so limited, as limited as insignificant the planet Earth is compared to the whole cosmos.

i can tell you there is no true anwser to that question. but my personal opinon is that god created so much space because he wanted us to be interested. and it is possible that he put it there to show people that he does exist.
i mean if you look at it planets are millions of light years away and so is god. god is always there but if we cloud are minds we act like he is not even there. that is true with stars if it is cloudy we dont even bother looking at them.
