Thanks for everyone's help on my fruits & veggies post! I just have a question about eggs. I heard eggs are a great source of nutrients for dogs but is it better for the eggs to be cooked or raw? I've read that raw eggs could carry salmonella- making them a dangerous snack. Is this true? Do you give your dog cooked or raw eggs??

Dogs have a different digestive system than humans and do not have to worry about salmonella poisoning. I feed my Corgi a raw, whole egg every morning. She eats it shell and all and loves it! First egg was interesting, it took her a minute to figure out what to do with it. Then she finally very carefully dropped it and was able to reap the rewards!

Eggs are a great source of protein and calcium. Don't worry about the salmonella threat. Yes it does exist but it is about one in 20 million eggs from a commercial source. A dog's digestive system passes food very fast so that a salmonella ingestion will be passed before any serious consequences can result. If you feed cooked eggs then salmonella will not be a problem. When I have any eggs that I don't want to eat I give them to the dogs, raw. If you hard boil an egg then you destroy any salmonella.

It is a myth that raw eggs are not good for your dog. The myth came about because raw egg whites can prevent the absorbtion of biotin (a B-Complex vitamin) not because they carry salmonella. While that is true the whites can prevent absorbtion, the egg yolk supplies enough biotin to your dog that it counteracts the effect of the egg whites. Keeping the egg raw keeps the food alive and enables your dog to absord the nutrients more efficiently. Eggs are a great source of protein, B vitamins, vitamins E, D & A, magnesium, selenium, amino acids, and zinc. The egg shells are also very good for your dog but should be ground up very fine.
All of my dogs get a raw egg every sunday morning.

Edited to add: Free range eggs are the best as they get most of their nutrients from the pasture and are free of antibiotics and hormones.

My dogs will eat them any way at all. But I only give them to them raw when they are no more than a day or two old (the eggs, not the dogs). After that I hard boil them (soft boiling will not kill all salmonella, if it is present). They don't care. They love them anyway.

If a dog can sit around licking his butt and various other parts of his anatomy with no apparent ill affects I don't think a raw egg once in a while will harm it! Just break that egg in a bowl and let him have it, good for his coat, nice soft sheen.

bring eggs to a boil, remove from stove top. Leave in water for 5 minutes. Cool. Serve entire egg with shell to dog. Chop into smaller pieces if dog doesn't like to eat big pieces.

Don't replace more than 1/3 of your kibble (I'm guessing you feed kibble?) with fresh meats or egg. If you do you will distroy the balance of minerals, vitamins in the kibble formula.

What does balance mean??? Here is just one example.

Too much phosphorus (from meat) and not enough calcium (from bones, yogurt, egg shells).

If calcium is deficient in the blood, the body will withdraw some from the bones to insure enough calcium is in the blood stream for regulation of the heart muscle. Bone can lose up to 30% to 40% of its calcium before a deficiency becomes apparent.

When dogs are in the wild they eat eggs raw. Domestics should to.

Do not give your dog raw eggs! It will make them sick! Yes eggs are very nutritious but make sure they are cooked! Hope this helps.

Eggs are a very good source of proteins, vitamins, and calcium.
Just hard-boil them, let them cool, and feed them to your dog. It'll benefit from them.
