The camera lense has a protective film over it and they can advance the protective film when it gets dirty. The protective film is simliar to a VHS or cassette tape and the way the tape spins from one spool to another while advancing past the tape heads.

Usually with a wire brush during a pit stop...there is a crewman that can reach over the wall with a wire brush on a telescoping handle to scrub debris from the grille. Occasionally, the front tire carrier can get it with his gloved hand as well.

The drivers all have a tube in their helmets that hook onto the camera so they can spit on the lens during the race.
