Depends on sponsors.

Kevin Harvick is in the winner's circle, McMurray has not won a race in years and not in the #26. Harvick won Daytona and some races in 2006. That pays him more as has been stated above with the contingency sponsors who pay per performance. There is also money given to the pole winner and for leading halfway into the race, as well as some other awards that radio or TV give like the "hard charger" or the "Goody's headache award".

Its all about sponsors and the drivers career and teams. The better driver you are and the better you finish the more money you get and the more money your sponsors have the more money they pay you and the more money that the sponsors pay the teams means you get even more money. It depends on your career stats as well and its because Harvick has been racing longer and is a better driver stat wise then McMurray who has only won a handful of races in his career and isnt that much of a contender each week.

OK, here we go. You know all those decals on the front fender of the racecars? A few are mandatory, as they belong to Official Series Sponsors, such as Busch, Sunoco & Craftsman. Each of the others represent not only products that are in use on that car, but also contingency awards from those companies for finishing in particular spots. Not all cars run the same contingency programs, so they win different amounts.
Say for example Champion Spark plugs pays $1000 to the top 10 cars running their product. You finish 1st, but you run Autolite plugs. You don't get the grand, but the others do. It adds up.

Check nascar.com under 'race results'. At the bottom they show some of the official awards like "Pit move of the Race". These are all included in the drivers' listed winnings.

It comes from Contingency Awards. The decals between the front tire and door number are the Contingency sponsors they are eligible for. It is based on Owners points from the previous year. They are eligible for them all year and get bonus money for where they finish in the race. Harvick made more money than McMurray because he has more Contingency sponsors and bonus money from them.

I depends on what kind of deal they sign up for with their teams. Everyone is different. They explained it on Inside Nextel Cup one night. You should watch that show, they expain alot, stuff that I never knew.

Also, check out nascar.com in the section nascar 101, it explains this fully. Hope that helps.
