Someone I know delivers pizza as a second job and he says that when african american people order pizza they never tip. He says he has been delivering pizza for a long time and everyone who has ever delivered pizza before know this and just have to accept that most african americans don't tip. Do they not know they should or do they just choose not to? Once it was raining hard and he had three pizzas and had to walk up three flights of stairs and they wrote 0 on the tip line. I think that is so rude!

I said MOST not ALL...please read before you start mouthing off. And yes it is a known FACT that they don't tip. Ask any delivery driver and they will tell you....it's really sad!

Yes, Yes, Yes, YES... tip the drivers. Having worked in a pizza chain for 12 years now, drivers are paid less because they are expecting that tips are going to compensate for the lower wage, just as the wait staff is.

As for African-Americans not tipping, or not tipping well, in our part of the country, it is the Mexicans/Hispanics who have that reputation. I heard this from one of our waitresses. It's sad to think that race should play ANY part in it. It is true, however, that there are good tippers and poor tippers among all races and classes!! Don't think that just because someone has money that they tip well... some of them are terrible or "nada" tippers!

As for delivery charges charged by the companies, there are several reasons for it.... 1-insurance on the drivers, 2-helps to "cover" the driver NOT being in the "store" while on deliveries, and 3-to cover the driver's vehicle costs (or if the chain owns the delivery vehicle, it pays for that vehicle's costs). Drivers only receive a percentage of the delivery charge which is supposed to compensate them for the COSTS (gas, wear'n'tear, etc.) of their vehicles to make the deliveries. I stopped delivering 12 years ago because I was not covering the COSTS of my vehicle even back THEN.... and NOW, with gas prices SO HIGH... that small part of the delivery charge covers even less!

So.... TIP AWAY, folks, and don't assume the delivery charge "covers" the tip... OR the COSTS... cuz it DOESN'T!!!

Yes, I always tip pizza delivery drivers. I tip the full 15% (if not more) even if there is already a delivery charge, since I don't know if the driver gets the delivery fee or if that goes to the pizza place for having to hire drivers.

Pet Peeve: pizza places shoiuld not keep advertising and encouraging people to order for pizza delivery and then have a delivery charge. This makes it harder on the delivery person too since many people feel this covers the drivers's tips.

I'm not basing my answer on race...I'm basing it on whether someone should tip...because you're going to have people who don't tip regardless of what race they are.

That said, I always tip something. If an order comes w/i a decent amount of time (i.e. as stated by cashier who took order), then I always tip 20%. If an order is late (by late, I mean 20 to 30 + min. past the expected time), then I call and if I'm told it just left, I do not hold the driver responsible and still tip 20%. If I'm told the driver left and should have been there, then I do hold the driver responsible and will only tip a dollar or two...because if driver is lost and the provided directions aren't doing it for them, then they have my number and a responsibility to contact me for directions. But, I've never NOT tipped someone at least something.

I think this is a generalized statement that has been around Robin Hood's barn way too many times.

Then again, it could also be a cleaver ploy to get African-Americans to tip to prove that they supposedly do not tip.

But to answer your question, I do tip the pizza guy because he works hard for the money. I do unto others as I would have them do unto me. My pizza delivery person is always Hispanic.

Yes I always tip the pizza delivery driver, HOWEVER I do not think that saying that EVERY African American does not tip. I'm sure there are plenty of PEOPLE no matter what color or ethnic background they may be...that choose not to tip delivery drivers. Some places charge extra for delivery and many people feel like if they are paying that extra charge that they should not need to tip. I think it's much more rude to stereotype a race of people than it is to not tip the delivery driver.

I rarely have pizza delivered, but when I do, I always tip the delivery person since it's worth not having to leave the house to get it.

yeah i always tip too, just like if I was at a restaurant, tipping is just the right thing to do, plus they are bringing it right to your front door! How "nice" that is of them, even if it is their job. Besides, they don't make that much an hour anyway, so they really live off of their tips.
