I don't get it. Why do we have to pay taxes? Its not fair. I learned today that we had to pay over 50% of our income this year in taxes. That sucks. Why?????

If you're paying over 50% of your income in taxes, you're quite wealthy indeed and can easily afford it. That's one of the key components of a good tax system -- it is levied upon those who have the capacity to pay.

(My AGI last year was over $125k and my total tax bite for ALL taxes was closer to 19% -- Federal and State Income Taxes, property taxes and a good rough guestimate on sales taxes. No abusive tax shelters either, strictly by the rules. If you're paying 50%, I'll swap incomes with you in a HEARTBEAT, and laugh all the way to the bank.)

If you don't like things such as public education, useable roads, police and fire protection, safe air travel, military defense of the nation and a minimal cusion to help protect you if you fall on hard times then by all means let's do away with taxes! Personally, I kinda like those things and don't have a problem in paying my fair share for them.

If you think our taxes are too high, move to Europe and see how bad it is on that side of the pond. You'll be back in a week or two after paying over $8.00 for a gallon of gas and sales taxes that range between 15% and 25%. Or stick around there for a while and enjoy the pleasure of paying up to 75% in income taxes if you're really wealthy.

Or you could move to Mexico. Taxes are a lot lower there. But then you have terrible roads, high crime, corrupt cops and virtually no right to sue if you are injured by someone else's carelessness. You can isolate yourself from those problems if you have enough money but some how, some way you WILL shell out for what you want in the end.

so you can dial 911
to prevent your boyfriend from being abusive
to provide roads for you to drive on
to give health care to your grandparents.\
to pay for the school you attend
to prosecute crooks, thieves and murderers
the list goes on and on
the actual rate for working class is closer to 27%
no one pays 50% on taxes, much less (we). if you dont want the truth, DONT ASK!

NO taxes paid = No roads, no schools, no social security (so your grandma would still be workin), no library, no hospitals, no military (so we all would be dead right now), no police, no fire dept., no clean water plants, no electric plants, etc, etc, etc

Yes we pay A LOT of taxes, but without them the USA would look like Afganistan or Somalia.

You don't have to pay any taxes.

Taxes are voluntary.

Most people pay taxes because they want more prisons and more patrol cars and more policemen, firemen, teachers, nurses, judges and so on.
