It is a fact of life that whatever a person allows to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his action. This is the premise behind Philippians 4:8 and Colossians 3:2,5: establishing wholesome thought patterns. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says we "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." This is how we allow Jesus to be "the Lord of our lives". That gives us a pretty clear picture of the kind of music we SHOULDN'T listen to.
Obviously, the best kind of music we can listen to is that which praises and glorifies God. There are a lot of Christian musicians and singers out there, spanning nearly every genre available to the secular market. From there, it is a matter of taste. There is nothing inherently wrong any particular style of music. But if secular music leads you to think about, or get involved in something that does not glorify God – then you should avoid it.

This can be a complex question and answer. I'll try to make my response simple. To answer the question up front, I would say no. Here's why....
Listening to secular music gives us the opportunity to see the viewpoint of our world and be effective and realevant in speaking to others about the Truth. I'm not promoting listening to it on a regular basis because what goes in to our mind has the capability to be pondered and then acted upon. Some of it needs to be avoided because it is blatent junk. Of course, secluding ourselves from it can leave us disconnected and unable to communicate in a way that is understood.
I say a majority of your listening should be high integrity material with carefully selected lyrics. Music is powerful and sticks with you longer than any other type of media because of it's catchy tune and specific, melodic lyrics.
My ipod is about 85 percent Christian and 15% secular. Ultimately, a prayerful, biblical decision is best rather than taking the advise of humans. We have ways of messing things up.

Seriously speaking, music that fills your soul with hardness or lust is no good. I think music should fill the heart with glee and brighten your day. I listen to the radio and at times I find the lyrics nasty. Then there are also songs on the radio that are nice, I think we are to quick to judge right and wrong. I have a friend that gave away all his Petra because he was told Rock was Evil. Hello

There is no such thing as 'sin'. Some religions claim it is a sin to dance, now a sin to listen to a certiain kind of music, eat a certain type of food, -- these are all man-made rules. God loves unconditionally, he gave us free will. Do you think He would give us free will and then judge us? That wouldn't be unconditional love - that would be a condition then to be judged? The only one who judges our behaviour is truly our selves. And others judge wrongly and decide that we're 'sinners' because that's the human condition!

Not according to any diety I know of, but there are some stricter disciplines which would disagree. I take my cue from the Bible where the Lord said, "Make a joyful noise," and clapping your hands or tapping your feet is pretty joyful. Certain types of "secular" music I do avoid though, not because of what JC has said, but because I find them offensive or definitely lacking in joy.

The truth is that everything in this universe is subject to cause and effect, negative and positive, and really sin is just a moralistic way of looking at the negative aspect of human nature. If you believe it is a sin then it will be, if you believe those who think it is a sin are judgmental and have no right to tell you what to think or do, then that is your reality.
It all comes down to whether you trust yourself as a master of your own reality or not.

Disclaimer: I'm no longer Xtian....But when I was it wasn't considered a sin unless you listen to music with vulgar lyrics, sexual innuendo, or somebody like Marilyn Manson.
Personally, I feel as tho "sins" (if you really want to use such a loaded word) consist of harming others or yourself. You could also include offending your Deity in that criteria, I guess. So you have to ask yourself "is listening to this music hurting anyone/is this content offensive to my Deity?"
It depends on what you're listening to and what your personal values are. Even Xtians are gonna give you conflicting answers on this one.

Not a sin. However the music needs to be inline with the laws of God. Music is a powerful influence, be wise in what you listen to.

Some of it will lead to temptation, a downgrading of moral values, a hardening of the soul, even used to change someones politlical leaning, etc, etc.
Since most of the secular music is indeed worldly, trendy, it's most certainly not divine endorsed, so to speak.
Again, it depends on the particular song, maybe singer also, so be careful.

You mean secular people aren't able to express love for God or his works or his qualities? Is the human condition a sin? It is? Then I guess you're right.
