A few years ago, a girlfriend of mine and I, met a very sweet man on the internet...He was lonely, and so were we...both going through a tough time. He got our addresses to send us some cards, at least that is what he told us, and began sending us both, very sweet, expensive gifts. I know we should have not accepted them, but we did. We all lost touch of each other when my computer crashed, and I have been trying to find him ever since, because I feel the right thing to do, in spite of the temptation to keep the gifts,...would be now to pay him back, because I am in a better financial situation...So I ask you, has anyone ever done this for you? And what did you do? Please don't think I am a bad person for taking the gifts, I was out of work and down on my luck pretty bad at the time...I am still trying to find him. He insisted that I didn't feel like this, but I do.

He gave these gifts freely. You would actually make him feel bad if you try to pay him back. Allow yourself to accept the gift and enjoy what you had with him. Pay it forward, so to speak. Give a "gift" to someone else that can use a helping hand, or a kind word/thought.

Well at least you being honest and trying to find him but was there no return address on the boxes? maybe and AD in the paper where he is from? Maybe he was hiding something and did not want you to know where he was. If I were you I would not feel bad as he made the offer and sent them, it is not like you used him then stop talking to him on purpose. I have received gifts from people online and they were small things but it was the thought that counts.
