I only ask this question because the 20/20 special or whatever show it was on. Where evangelists had discussions with atheists about why they did believe and why atheists should.

Because :

a. They believed something so abstract, they wanted other people to believe it like themselves, just in case they are wrong, they would not look like fools.

(Insecurity)

b. They believed they will get brownies points for converting others and atheists will most probably be finding out their flaws and will shake their faith.

(Self hypnosis)

c. The believed it is their duty to "spread the good news" and those who refused to "accept the gospel" are deemed as "satan" and atheists are perhaps one of those who cannot accept this "good news" hence the big big satan and they feel it is their duty to "save" them.

(Self Proclaimed Righteousness)

Your question negates itself. You ask, "I mean does it really matter what other people believe?"

The fact that you are asking this question in this manner indicates 1). That you think it shouldn't make any difference. 2). That this point matters to you, and you think we should agree with you.

The latter point negates the second question you asked. It, therefore, does matter what we believe, and the fact that you're bothered by our beliefs itself should give you some insight into it. You believe the issue is important enough to raise and to wrangle over. This means it matters. Why should the soul of another person work any differently? The only difference is that we value our faith (and the uncertainty of asking a question implying it doesn't matter through its wording, but implying it does by asking the question).

Alright here's a thought. What if whatever you believe that's what's right. So Christians will go to either Heaven or Hell, Hindu's will be reincarnated, and whatever after life you believe in is what will happen to you. That would certainly explain why everyone claims to have recieved prophecies and say that they were spoken to by God(s/esses) to preach to people about the right religion.

Ever read the Hans Christian Andersen story about "The Emperor's New Clothes"?

It mattered very much that one kid saw -- and loudly said -- "But Mommy, the king is butt-nekkid!"

It was enough to show up the rest of the crowd as damned fools.

I want there to be more believers in Jesus. I would like it if an atheist converted. I like atheists. Atheist want there to be less believers in Jesus. They would like it if a Christian converted. I don't know if they like Christians. So I guess maybe it does matter.

I wish I knew the answer to that question. As a Wiccan, I have to abide by the three times three rule, and be cognizant and understanding of all religions. I don't understand why it isn't that way with every religion. All of us are on a different plane and have a different way about how we are getting to our final place, and it should be left that way.

Personally I don't care one way or another. That being said I enjoy the evangelical atheist's on here, they are always good for a laugh.

I believe it is because their faith is shaken when intelligent, sometimes brilliant individuals present cogent, well reasoned arguments against the supernatural. Their beliefs are based on faith alone and therefore there is little basis for defense.

no only what is in your heart, as Christians were suppose to help who we can, we do not force anything on others they believe what they want but we tell them about our times, they can take it or leave it. i would like everybody to know how i found Jesus, but it might not be want they want right now, god has a purpose for everybody. its up to them when there ready to here the truth.

Why do you assume what you see on TV represents all Christians. Yes, I wish atheists could understand the miracle of God in my life, but their life is their choice.
