What is the minimum wage? If food companies pay their wait staff a decent salary, what would that be? $15 an hr? Or more? Will they make more with the current tipping system of 15%-20%? Say I order a steak and it cost $20. Then 15% of $20 is $3. So in 1 hour, you need to serve 5 people each ordering $20 steak to break even. How many customers can you serve in 1 hour?

Many chain restaurants are going to a system called "team serving" which, in my opinion is ridiculous.

Basically, when you are served at a restaurant that is a team service restaurant, you may have one person bring your drinks, another take your order, another bring your food, etc. So, when you tip the average 18% on a $50 bill, you are giving your server $9.00. That $9.00 gets put in a pot and the tips are divided at the end of the night. The server may only end up with $2-$3 of that original tip.

That seems kind of silly and also doesn't promote good service (why would anyone go out of their way for you when there are other servers who will make up the difference?).

I think a per hour wage would be better, and also eliminate the need for the problems associated with tipping and would also ensure that servers never get stiffed (which has happened to every server at least once--no matter how good!).

It's really difficult to say. I worked at both a chain restaurant, where I was paid the standard min. wage for waitstaff about $4 in my state. I've also worked at a country club, where I did not receive tips, but was paid $14 an hour. I liked the chain restaurant better, I actually made more money. On an average night, I would make about $100 in 5-6 hours. At the country club, I would work 6 hours and make $84 before taxes.

At an average chain restaurant, as a server you would probably be assigned 3 or 4 tables a night. If your section was full, and you got 4 tables of 4 people each, then you would be serving 16 people at one time. If they each had $25 in food, then that would $400 in sales. If they tipped the standard 15%, then you would make about $60. They tables would probably sit for about an hour to an hour and half.

well not ecxactly...because I know some places where they take the tips you have made and give you only a percentage from that...and sometimes the manager can just decide how much you are getting
