And yes, I'm quite aware of the fact that newspapers take trees, but I think the good it could do would outweigh the use of natural resources it took, plus they could plant trees to offset the use of paper, and there's the fact that trees are renewable resources at least.

The purpose of a newspaper is to sell advertising so that it can remain profitable and in business.

As all print space is at a premium, the editors have to read the minds of the subscribers and determine what is fit to print.

If an "environmental awareness" section is warranted, it will be printed. If it is profitable, then advertisers will want to be seen on the page.

The question is: How much information overload and propaganda can the public take before it goes in one ear and out the other.

There are too many people with anti-American agendas that have hijacked the environmental movement and have caused more harm to its message than good.

In many countries the 'better quality' newspapers carry a regular environment supplement or have an environment page in the newspaper itself. Never having been to the US I don't know what the policy of the newspapers is over there.

There's also a concerted effort by many publishers to print on largely recycled paper and use only pulp sourced from sustained forests.

although it would suit me to have a separate section, I think most people would happily skip it (the UK Guardian has 2 environmental pages on a Wednesday, but not enough to cover everything, so fucusses on negative stories)

The environment is not separate, it is woven through all our lives. Separating out as something other is one of the traits of western culture that has got us into the current parlous state.

It would be better to have an environmental paragraph in every story. eg a "celebrities" dress, made from GM cotton, taking n galleons of water, x gallons of agri-chemicals, dyed with ... or re-used from a charity shop. But this would require us to demand much higher standards from reporters and their bosses.

and here is the reason there are no environment paragraphs or sections - there is no significant advertising revenue (not compared to selling luxury goods, cars etc)

It is possible that more people would become aware of the many resourceful things that they could do to help the enviroment. But on another hand do we need more newspaper. There are many, many newspapers out there and possilby they could take out the junk pages and add such a section.

As you said that it would take more trees, so electronic media would probably be better.

Unfortunately, newspapers are a business and they are going to print what sells: sex, drugs and scandles. Most papers are lucky to have an environmental section once a week.

No. That's only needed where liberals hang out.
And as for paper co.s, one of the biggest forrested land owners in the country is Mead Paper Co. They grow and regrow a large portion of their renewable paper resources (that's trees to you).
Say you've got 10 plots of trees, each plot grows a year's supply of paper pulp. It takes 10 yr.s to grow a paper tree. By the time your 10th plot is used up, plot #1 is ready again.
Ok?....................... OK.

its is an exelent idea ,just judging by the people here the general public is very uneducated about Nature and its functions and what all depends on the environment and how close the economy is related to Ecology
good point

and they could add one cent to the price of the news paper to go towards reforestation ,
in mexico in some places we add one peso to the price of the water to be returned to the environment for reforestation ,in a year this can add up to millions of pesos

Yes it would be good to have an environmental section, and we do recycle the Newspapers and Magazines as well.

What's all the interest in the environment already. Us old folks have been recycling, composting, insulating, storm windowing, reusing, swapping, donating since the early 1970s, if not before. Didn't your teachers or parents teach you about conservation and respect for the environment--Mother Earth. Geeez.
