A mini Aussie. I have a four month old pup that will be 10 to 14 lbs when she is full grow.
Aussies are very smart and learn quickly. Their main problem is getting bored, but there are a lot of great toys for them. Crate training is a must, as well as puppy and basic training with other peolpe and dogs. Most important is lots of love. They NEED you, and need to sleep near you so that they can hear you. I keep mine in her crate at the foot of the bed (on the floor) at night.

Well, all small breeds are high maitnance, so you'll just have to settle with a beagle, because they are the friendliest, moat loyal, obedient and easy to train dogs I ever knew.
They aren't that hyper either. In fact, they may be lovable, but they are sometimes just plain lazy. For example, I knew somebody with a beagle named Sadie Mae, and she was the perfect dog!
I'd suggest a beagle, the perfect dog!

Check out Rat Terriers. My first one is 1 yr, and although he is high energy he also is very easy to shut off-he sits on the couch and gets his belly rubbed within 1 second of racing through the family room! Mine is a mini, which means he is under 13 inches at the withers (shoulders). They do come in standard also, which depending on the lineage can get up to 35 lbs.

He is also the easiest dog to train I have EVER worked with-and I train for competition.

My breeder has 2 litters expected this year, if you want more info check them out at http://www.imageevent.com/skywalkerkennel

Try a cockapoo (cocker spaniel/poodle mix). They are the size you are looking for, intelligent enough to learn basic obedience, and have a friendly personality.

Labs, although they are medium to big size and shed a lot twice a year. But they are extremely intelligent. Usually all small dogs are hyper.

I go with a mini Poodle or Miniature Schnauzer.

Read more about the Schnauzer here http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/miniature-schnauzer-puppy.html

Good luck with your selection.

Miniature poodles. They don't shed and are very smart. Just make sure you get one from a reputable breeder.
