It all starts in your hometown. Do local contests, sing for local activities ( banquets, pageants, church functions, pet shows), the more people in your own town hear you and ask you to sing the more likely you are to make it. You have to have people behind you from the get go. Also google Audacity, it's a free recording program, you'll need a mic, I recomend an MXL Condenser Recording mic ( It's what I use), and start writing your own stuff and get it out there. Well very little is cheap these days. You will probably need a vocal coach and those aren't cheap at all. Not to mention you'll need studio time which also isn't cheap. Maybe someone will hear you singing and decide to sponser you but that's a long shot.

Go to a record bar and record your own album. You can choose the song(s) you wanted. Its not much expensive, in our city, there's one record bar that costs P50 (In the Philippines, or in America, 1$) per song. You can also try joining singing contests or auditions. Or you can perform in your town or in some restaurants and bars. And, take lessons and learn! Good Luck!

do you have any idea how many are out there trying..listen I'm not trying to quash your dreams ,,,,,I say go for it, but get your education so that you will have something to fall back on just in case you don't make it......
