If you want PHYSICAL changes, I'd say the only "real" improvement was the turbine engine and the NOTAR, and improved avionics that made flying choppers simpler.

You could argue that there is NO NEED for a fundamental change, as the platform itself is so flexible and adaptable.

Armed chopper / gunship basically changed the way battles are fought. The transport chopper UH-1 Iroquois was transformed into Seawolf by adding skid-mounted rocket pods and miniguns, plus door guns. When helicopter-carried anti-tank missiles was invented (namely, the AH-1 Cobra), armored warfare took on a whole new meaning.

Troop carriers also created "vertical envelopment" which completely changed the way battles can be fought by vastly improving mobility and resupply methods, as well as reduce casualties by providing medevac.

The availability of medevac through choppers since Korean War have saved uncountable lives since in both military and civilian uses.
