All answers concerning bootlegging are pretty much on target,but there were the young men that had just gotten out of the military and they were looking for excitement so they took various "hotrods" and would tour around challenging bootleggers.
Bill France organized these men into a "pure stock" racing league that latter became NASCAR.In 1949 the first NASCAR race took place in Charlotte,N.C. on .75 mile dirt track.

in the old days, the moonshine runners would get together to find out who had the fastest car. pretty soon, these races started being run by local promoters who, many times ran off with, all the money while, the race was still being run. Bill France, along with some other promoters and, drivers, founded NASCAR in 1949 to have more control over how the purses were split and, how the revenue was spent.

Because Bill France Sr was a very smart man and new that he could put the bootleggers on the track to race and the people would watch !!!!GO # 24 !!!!!!!!!!

Bootleggers started it. They evaded police who were chasing them. After prohibition ended, they continued racing. They all of a sudden had lots of money AND time on their hands. So, they did it for enjoyment.
