Our highschool class is doing a debate covering the re-instatement of the draft. my partner and i have decided on our harms- 1) insufficient troops, 2) troop fatigue/exhaution. we need some evidence that can support us. if you find anything please just leave a link to give us the source (you don't need to write anything.. just give us useful links). I'll give the points to the person that can give us 1-2 useful sites that can help us... all we need are 2 more sources covering this topic.

it isn't my opinion whether we should be in the war or not.. but this is a project that i have to do for class. i have to find these facts with or without our choice. please don't post plain opinions. if you want to say that the war is "wrong..." then give us a link, we can use it to build our arguement against.

When looking for sources, be careful that you find both sides of the arguement. A lot of websites will be biased to one side, republicans tend to favor the draft, some democrats are against it. Good luck with your debate though! : ) Jamie

You must realise that it will be Congress, not President Bush, who would bring about such a measure. The President cannot reinstate a draft. He can propose the idea, but if the majority of Congress does not support it, then there's no conscription. That talk about reinstating the draft is just nonsense. You have truly no reason to fear being conscripted, at your young age. If there ever is a conscription and you fear you may be eligible, however, you might as well enlist before being conscripted: this way, you will have a bit more control over what exactly you will do in the military.

No, you never have as good of an army when you are forcing someone to do something. The all volunteer military are all there because they want to be. What we need is more support from congress and them getting behind this action 100% to finish the job we started. We can walk away a proud nation who helped one in need. The congress we have now is doing nothing but getting people killed all in their bid for the white house. The President does not want the draft, The Pentagon does not want the draft and the American public does not want the draft.

One place to look is at the Israeli IDF. One of the questions to ask is "Why don't the Israelis resist the draft like the spoiled American kids do?"
And that would open a whole another can of worms, wouldn't it.
In my opinion, every able bodied, abled minded American male and female between the ages of 18 and 30 should be subject to a minimum of two years active duty, and four years active reserve duty.
In order for a draft to work the exemptions have to be applied to everyone. Do away with college deferments - the Israelis seem to be able to work this quite well. Take away a judge's ruling giving a felon the choice of the military or jail.
According to Jay Leno, Americans in general are spoiled brats. The one thing he missed in his tirade is the reason Amerians are spoiled - is the lack of discipline and lack of work ethic.
Think about it.

Good luck with your debate: several of the answers above have provided you with some of the information you are seeking.
One thing i do ask of you: please don't confuse a nation that requires military service as part of its citizenship requirements (like Israel) with a draft system like the Us had in the 1940s-70s.
a National service commitment like Israel, confirms that a person willing to live under the laws of that land will comply with the laws of that country, or will move from the country. a national service plan is applied to all of its citizens equally.
A draft, as done in the US, is a type of lottery: with the losers attending national service, and the winners getting to keep their liberty for a while longer. It does not guarantee what type of person you will get: you will get the willing with the unwilling. Only the physical and mental screening at the time of the admittance will tell remotely what type of person you have..
In this case, one of the respondents answered the way i would have: use your military in a manner that's responsible. don't commit it to a grandiose task that in numbers its not capable of doing at the outset.

No, it won't and should never be brought back. With a democratic majority in Congress any such bill would never make it out of the State Capitol building. Also there are too many ways to dodge a draft now that there wasn't during Vietnam, all you have to do is say that you are gay or Jehovah's Witness or something.

I have no links sorry. But please consider this. Even though the troops are fighting for are freedom of rights. A draft does not give freedom of choice. Wrong or right should not matter in a country that believes in total freedom.

Oh yeah, it worked so well in the '70's ... what part of stories of draft dodgers, demonstrations on campuses or burning of draft cards would you like to focus on? The entire '70's is a " site " ... keep your points, ask your parents, Aunt's & Uncle's what it was like to live in the late 60's & 70's ...

Absolutely.
If the draft was enacted at the start of the Iraq war, our troops would be home by now.
When its someone elses child being sent to get shot at, its no problem. The fact of the matter is, Middle America has a much harder time sending their own kids to do the fighting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deployments_of_the_U.S._Military (this website lists all the countries the U.S. has military personnel deployed to as well as the number of personnel they deployed. This is important if you want a breakdown of the number of people deployed in conjunction with the previous website of the total number of military personnel the United States has.)
Good luck.
Notice how I'm the only one so far to give you what you're asking for?
