Open Office is a free Offfice Suite which has proven to be an alternatvie to Microsoft Office except for one thing that I mentioned, it's FREE. There are many other sites dedicated to Open Office and even those that offer Open Office Tutorials.
OpenOffice.org is a collection of different applications that work together closely to provide the features expected from a modern office suite. Many of the components are designed to mirror those available in Microsoft Office. The components available include:
Writer — a word processor similar in look and feel to Microsoft Word and offering a comparable range of functions and tools. It also includes the ability to export Portable Document Format (PDF) files with no additional software, and can also function as a WYSIWYG editor for creating and editing web pages. One important difference between Writer and Microsoft Word is that in Writer, many functions and number formats from Calc (below) are available in Writer's tables. Another difference is that in Writer, automatic save is off by default.
Calc — a spreadsheet similar to Microsoft Excel with a roughly equivalent range of features. Calc provides a number of features not present in Excel, including a system which automatically defines series for graphing, based on the layout of the user's data. Calc is also capable of writing spreadsheets directly as a PDF file.
Impress — a presentation program similar to Microsoft PowerPoint. It can export presentations to Adobe Flash (SWF) files allowing them to be played on any computer with the Flash player installed. It also includes the ability to create PDF files. Impress suffers from a lack of ready-made presentation designs. However, templates are readily available on the Internet.[6]
Base — a database program similar to Microsoft Access. Base allows the creation and manipulation of databases, and the building of forms and reports to provide easy access to data for end-users. As with Access, Base is able to work as a front-end to a number of different database systems, including Access databases (JET), ODBC data sources

the same thing happened to me. you might be able to view your files with wordpad if you need to check something quick.
but now you should download openoffice from www.openoffice.org
some people say its better, some say its worse.
personally i liked word a bit better but openoffice is still great. just download it, its completely free unlike microsoft office, which would cost above $100 (not sure bout the price but its in the hundreds). it also comes with a powerpoint equivalent which is just as good, and a couple of other programs.
oh and if you do dl openoffice just a hint. you can save your word document in many types. personally i save them in the microsoft word type so that you can email it to yourself and print it out at school (like if you have to print out 10+pages)._

You have a couple of options. 1) Convert the documents to a format editable in most editors such a doc (version 6 or less NOT 2007), Or RTF will also work. 2) download a PDF writer and print the document to the pdf writer then edit it with Foxit (free pdf reader/editor) 3) uninstall the trail version and remove all entrances from the windows registry then reinstall the trail version for another 30 days. <-- difficult but most effective. Once done be sure to export your document to a more global format like rtf or doc version 6 or word 97.

You should be able to view them with Microsoft Works. It was probably included with your computer. If not it is far cheaper then Word.

OpenOffice would be a good choice
I'd say the best choice but I'm not familiar with Google docs
I question the security with Google being an online app
OPen Office would be a more secure option.

OpenOffice is one way you can go. It is a suite of applications that is meant to be an alternative to MS Office, it is open source and FREE!
Not sure of the site offhand, just search for OpenOffice.
