If you have this Colt, it would definitely be worth spending the $100.00 fee for Colt Firearms to give you this information. It may take some time but if the gun is in any kind of decent shape, having it provenance is that much better and will return more than the $100.00 spent to get it.

You can probably find records for Colt serial numbers for free on some websites but it will generally just tell you when it was made and how many were made that year. I wish you luck.

You mean, of course, an 1860 Colt? The Colt Model 1860 Army was the Unions most purchased and issued revolver during the Civil War with over 127,156 acquired. Total production period for the Model 1860 Army ran from 1860 to 1873 for a total of approximately 200,000 revolvers. These revolvers utilized paper-wrapped cartridges, inserted into the cylinders and rammed with the attached loading lever which swung beneath the barrel and percussion caps were placed on each of the nipples behind each cartridge.

Like the other posters stated, write Colt and request history on your Colt. It is worth the hundred bucks.

Best.

The good Sergeant gave you good advise regarding the letter to the Colt Historian.

However, there ain't no Model 1863 Colt.

You will need to properly identify the revolver in order to get the factory letter.
