A hunting shotgun can not have more than three or four rounds. That's most states' fish and game laws.

You can add extension tubes to the shotgun; however, if the gun is capable of holding more the the hunting laws allow, your shotgun can be confiscated.

My tactical Remington 1100 has an extension tube on it holding 8 rounds. When I want to go hunting, I take the extension tube off.

You can add an extension tube to most pump and auto shotguns and can do so legally in most states. Check your state laws first.

Should have made myself clearer. Hunting shotguns will hold three rounds in the tube and one in the chamber.

Some shotguns are sold as tactical type weapons. For instance the Smith & Wesson 1300 is a pump shotgun that comes with a six round tube. If you wanted to hunt with this weapon, you would have to block part of the tube to physically prevent more than three rounds to be loaded.

No real set rule. Some (Winchesters in specific) hold 2+1, others like the Remingtons go 3+1, others like the SPAS hold more.

There are no laws that I know of that regulate the capacity of a shotgun other than the Calif ones about box magazines. Mag extenders, if they'll work on your model, aren't regulated as far as I know.
