No. They're not particularly odd at all when compared to many smaller sects. And "crackpot" is a very relative term. Most of my LDS friends very much blend in with the mainstream culture, which is hard to pull off if you're a true extremist. Even locally, there are fanatical groups that draw far more attention with their dress and behavior than any of the Mormons ever did. There are many 19th and 20th Century groups that are far more intriguing and/or alarming. For instance, check out some of the activities of the Cobbites (19th Century). They were for real, and they were active in rural Arkansas:

And here are some articles about the Hosanna Church in Louisiana, circa 2005. http://www.rickross.com/groups/hosanna.html

i don't think of it quite is real. The classics are merely "classic" because of the fact they have been solid sufficient to persevere by using time. modern-day novels have yet to be placed to the try, yet i'm particular in one hundred years, there will be some from as we talk that are nonetheless usual. in case you're finding for solid books, you have have been given to look a touch tougher than the teenybopper and the "person romance/homicide secret" sections of Barnes&Noble. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries had their literary trash, too. P.S. Are you particular you ought to be judging "literacy benefit" while your guy or woman grammar is so damaging? EDIT: I even have not something to ask the 1st poster. He/she has dreadful verbal substitute skills, and clearly did not understand the question, yet that doesn't substitute my answer to you. i'm not being an @ss; my respond became completely valid. you could not actual tell me that the previous century has not yielded ANY form of surprising literature, and in case you declare that to be the case, you for sure have not carried out a lot analyzing. EDIT: in case you could criticize an entire technology of writers such as you're stronger, i will criticize your grammar. regardless of the undeniable fact that i've got self assurance English isn't your community language, so i'm keen to shrink you *some* slack, nevertheless I nonetheless think of that is somewhat hypocritical of you to then turn around and placed down hundreds of thousands of novels written in a language you do not completely carry close. additionally, i'm petty sufficient to end this with: i'm going to provide it a relax once you do.

You may have stated the question erroneously:
Joseph Smith was the greatest religious crackpot of the 19th Century.
Bruce R McConkie was an admirer of Joe McCarthy, and his talks prove it - 20th century crackpot.
Gordon Hinckley carries the tradition into the 21st century.
Mormons simply believe in crackpot theology sometimes known as "Nickel and Dimenetics"

You obviously have not studied for yourself. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is what it claims to be and invites all to investigate and learn what we have to offer and then to decide for yourselves the validity of our claims. Christ said if any man will do my will, he will know of the doctrine, whether it be of God or if I speak of myself. The same can be said about the Gospel as revealed in this dispensation. Moroni stated in the Book of Mormon that if you will pray with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, He will manifest the truth of the work unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost, and by the power of the Holy Ghost, you may know the truth of all things.
Take the challenge, do the test and then come back to me with your new understanding.

I wouldn't phrase it that way, but there are more Mormons of that period that have problems than some others.
Add to the mix "Pastor Russell" and the New Thought/Christian Science/Unity school and you have pretty much the complement.

They base a huge part of their religion on visions that Joseph Smith received from god.
Mainstream christians base much of their doctrine on the words of men who only encountered god through visions, voices, and dreams. In fact, only five books of the bible were written or told about those who actually knew and walked with Jesus.
Doesn't seem any more silly to me.

They knew the place of safety it looks like so far, all during the wars, Salt Lake City didn't even have any wars, not even a shot was fired. Compare that with Europe's losses, or any others.

why dont you ask steve young, Bill Marriott, Ty Detmer, Harry Reid, Glenn Beck, and many other prominent, yet mainstream people who are all members of the mormon faith. they are only peculiar because they are devoted to their faith and live clean, moral lives. something that is not mainstream these days.
