Stoning was not an random act of violence as it is portrayed today. First one had to be judged guilty -- including two eye witnesses. The method of execution was dropping one huge stone on the criminal -- which would involve finding a suitable place for dropping the stone.

No witnesses -- no guilty verdict.
The "ritual" was a trial.

To what has been said I can only add a bit about the ritual, in the part which leads up to the actual stoning. This is from the Talmud, tractate Sanhedrin page 45b:

"When the trial is ended, the condemned is led forth to be stoned. The place of stoning was without (meaning outside) the court, even as it is written, “Bring forth him that hath cursed (Lev. 25:14). A man was stationed at the door of the court with the singalling flag in his hand, and a horseman was stationed at a distance yet within sight of him, and then if one says, “I have something further to state in his favor”, the signaler waves the flag and the horseman runs and stops them. And even if he himself says, “I have something to plead in my own favor,” he is brought back, even four or five times, providing hoewer that thre is substance in his assertion."

As aside notee the jewish bible does no longer point out a devil, or demons, yet maximum the catholic church accepts the life of demons and believes jesus gave his followers the powers to wrestle them (exorcisms).

They had to be drug from the city for cleanliness purposes. There had to be at least two witnesses to the crime committed, and usually they were also witnesses to the stoning. Once a person was sentenced to stoning, they were taken outside the city where others threw stones at them until they died.

As far as I know, the person being stoned was taken outside of town to a ditch or hole so that the people can pick up a rock as large as they can lift and drop it on the person. the rest you may have to look it up in the old testament, probably leviticus or deuteronomy

being stoned was a form of execution.

first he was thrown off a cliff, second he was turned over and a large rock was thrown on top of him, if he survived that he was pelted with stones.

do you know any cliffs by cities?

the witnesses were those to testified to the crime, the court that found him gulity, and any other affliated members of the case.
