I am a high school student and is deciding where to go to college. I really want to go to Embry Riddle in FL but the tuition is too much. I am thinking to go to Embry Riddle Worldwide. I want to be an airline pilot. Would that be a good place for me for my first two years of college? Thanks!

Embry Riddle is a good place to get flight training, but there are many schools that could give you a more widely respected degree for far less money.

There is no particular degree that you need in order to be a pilot. Some airlines do require a university education, but the requirements are not degree specific. You could major in anything and still qualify.

The key is your flight training. Somewhere, somebody got the idea that they could combine flight training and university. It's really not a great idea though. What you end up with is a commercial pilots license and a university degree in a field so unique specialized that it won't quilify you for any sort of work beyone those that simply require any university degree.

What's worse is that the flight training and degree would cost you a lot less if you got them independantly of each other.

Also, if you are unable to get a job as an airline pilot for any reason, your degree is essentially worthless, since it will likely be something like Flight Technology or Aeronautical Science or some such thing. It won't qualify you for a job outside of the avaition industry.

Do this: major in business at a state university and get your flight training at a local airport. Your tuition will be a tiny fraction of what Embry Riddle will charge and you can use the savings to get trough your flight training faster. Then if things don't work out with the airlines, you will have an education that actually qualifies you for employment!

EMBRY I hear is the best in the nation. I think their worldwide campus only offers Aviation management. If you want to do the airline pilot, i think you'll have to go to one of the FL campuses, or if its too expensive as you say, why not take the main classes in a community college, and then later on switch for the last couple to campus of choice (possibly you could have saved up enough money by then)

My son goes to ERAU at the Prescott Resident Campus, majoring in BSAE. Yes, tuition is quite a hassle. However, ERAU Worldwide is limited to several degrees. I'm not sure if ERAU Worldwide offers Aeronautical Science (Pilot). From what I am told, log in your hours elsewhere then join your junior/senior year to graduate w/ an ERAU degree. UND has quite a strong pilot program there, too.

If my answer wasn't good enough, you could ask other students that go to ERAU on MySpace. http://groups.myspace.com/embryriddle
