I got a repair kit at Wal-mart[sorry, can't remember the brand] and used it under the tank strap on my ' 88 S-10. That was 6 months ago and it still doesn't leak, but it took a lot of `prep'.
I drained the tank [leave the gas cap off to relieve pressure]
and used a wire brush on a drill to get to bare metal. It was a lot of work! If I had to do it again I would replace it with a new
Poly tank. It'll last forever.

You might try taking the old tank to a radiator repair shop and have them boil it out and repair the leak.
I had a leaking tank on a 68 AMX, and I pulled the tank, drained it, and filled it with water, also had it sitting in a tank of water, then tried to solder the leak, dumb thing still exploded, luckily no one was hurt, but the water gushed out of the filler neck and it took off like a roman candle. That's when I took it to a shop and have them do it. After that, I never had another problem. good luck.

KBS Coatings makes a popular gas tank sealer kit that works very well on metal or fibreglass tanks ...choose from 3 sizes.

I have a motorcycle tank with old sealer in it (I bought it that way) and the sealer has turned to sheets of what looks like caramelised sugar, and it sounds like a day at the beach!!!
I suppose it all depends on how well it is initially applied,Good luck.
