To rent you will need 4 weeks rent in advance and 2 weeks rent in 'bond'.
Go to http://www.realestate.com.au to view rentals in the area you want - then search by price, bedrooms or furnished / unfurnished etc

With the rental market the way it is at the moment, a landlord wont look too favourably on a 6 month lease. There is just too much demand for that length of time.
Your best bet is to try and get in a share house, but if you are only here for 6 months, wont you be travelling during that time?

In Australia as long as you have good references and credit rating you will be able to rent a flat. The usual minimum rental period is six months.
