I've never made up a resume before, so I want to know if I can put my friend of 14 years on there. Can she vouch for my character, or does it have to be someone for whom I've volunteered, or a teacher or something?

Also, how many contacts do I need?

Yes you can use your friend, I just applied for a job about a month ago and I used my best friend too. But you may also want to use other adults as well. It's best to use at least 3 or more references too.

If you list them as a personal reference that's fine, but be sure to include 'professional' references who can vouch for your work personality. A teacher is good, but if you have experience as a volunteer that would be better. A good rule would be to have a reference for every listing you have under work experience (if you have any) which includes volunteer work, and can include things like postions held in a club (for example, treasurer) babysitting/yard work, etc.

None on your resume. You need to prepare a separate sheet which lists the names and contact information for your references.

Yes, you may list your friend on there as well as teachers, spiritual leaders, coaches, volunteer coordinators, or anyone else who might be willing to attest to your purity of character, and to whom you are not related.

Good luck.

Three contacts are generally asked for in an application. You friend can be one of those contacts, but I would go with someone more influential for my references.
