How is the Sign of the Cross upside down, exactly? It's always done right side up, not inverted. In my many years of attending Mass, I've never once seen anybody make an inverted cross. And although they do the gesture differently in the Orthodox churches, it's not inverted there, either.

I've been asked this question many times by friends of mine. This comes from watching people who make the sign of the cross very quickly. As children going to Sunday School, we are taught to think "Forehead, Belly button, Shoulder, Shoulder" when making the sign of the cross. As we grow up and try to do things more quickly, we tend to forget the "belly button" part, and just make it to our chest (thus creating what looks like an upside down cross). Most Catholics don't even think about it, but we really should, as just making the sign of the cross is a prayer in and of itself!

+ The Sign of the Cross +
The Sign of the Cross prayer is done "right side up."
I open my hand and touch my brow, and say,
"In the name of the Father"
Then I touch my heart with my hand, and say,
"and of the Son."
I touch my shoulders left and right, and say,
"and of the Holy Spirit"
I say,
"Amen."
The Sign of the Cross is
- A statement of belief in the Holy Trinity
- A statement of belief in and thanksgiving for Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross
- God blessing us
- Us Blessing God ("I will bless the Lord at all times")
- A prayer using your entire body
- A Bible quote (Matthew 28:19)
In Latin:
In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti, Amen.
+ Saint Peter's Cross +
A St. Peter's Cross is an inverted Latin cross.
The origin of this symbol comes from belief that St. Peter was crucified upside down, as he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner that Christ died (upright).
An inverted cross has been the symbol of the Popes ever since.

Catholics making "hand signs"? You mean blessing themselves w/ the "sign of the cross"? Forehead, both shoulders and chest over heart, not necessarily in that order is NOT "upside down". I'm atheist now, but I was born and raised Byzantine Catholic, studied Catholicism at great length and NOWHERE did I ever see anyone do "hand signs" nor "make the cross upside down".

Technically, the Catholic sign of the go isn't the different way up. maximum individuals in basic terms make a greater modest, smaller go that happens to shorten the decrease go bar. otherwise, the the different way up go has constantly symbolized the Apostle Peter, who replaced into crucified the different way up. It replaced into that lunatic Jack Chick who made up the theory that an the different way up go replaced into meant to blaspheme the crucifixion. And, of path, he replaced into speedy to affiliate the the different way up choose the Roman Catholic Church. because of the fact that then, it has handed into the familiar public information, and has even been observed as a demonstration of evil by way of some Satanists. pass parent.

Don’t ever ever buy into their claims that they are atheists. They are militant anti-theists and there is a huge difference.Although viewing themselves as “free thinkers”, they all have a Party Line they follow rather closely. But the militant atheists -the ones who have devoted their lives to refuting Christianity- are almost like the demons …who believe more firmly in God’s existencethan do Christians !It can unequivocally be stated that militant atheists are some of the people who most solidly believe in God !Ain’t talking ‘practical atheists’ here …those who don’t even think much about atheism. They’re the true atheists.Professional atheists who’ve dedicated themselves to eradicating the Lord do so because they hate Him.They’re the God-haters.To which they’ll invariably reply: ‘How can we hate something we don’t believe in ?’.Exactly ! It’s their belief in God which drives them to relentlessly attack Him. Run of the mill, everyday ‘practical atheists’ don’tgive God a second thought. They’re the ones I worry about.Whereas militant atheists are fighting against the innate knowledge of suppressed in their hearts. As a militant atheist I can unequivocally state that there is no time in your life that you totally disbelieved in God. And -in fact- were driven to work against the Lord by belief in Him !It isn’t that militant atheists don’t believe God exists.Instead: That they don’t want God to exist. So when debating don’t ever buy into their *how can we believe in a sky pixie* claim because they most certainly do though they will never admit it.They have a fire and hatred in their hearts for God and that is what brings them into religious newsgroups on a regular basis. They want to destroy your faith like they have destroyed their own.
